Also posted elsewhere - but thought the followup and Becker content might make a welcome addition here.
Posted a thread ( http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...Tools-making-tools-with-tools?highlight=tools ) a while back about the hawk handle and hobo hand reel I made with my BK2. Finally had a chance to get out today to test them out.
First, I took a walk around a trail in one of the areas I hunt - to do some pre-season scouting and some trail maintenance. Found a decent sized tree partially blocking the path - perfect chance to test my longer hawk handle.
Here's the new one (not the prettiest, I know) next to the short stock handle.
Here's the offending tree. It's not huge, but I'm not lugging a chainsaw either - we'll call it even.
Victory is mine! The handle wasn't as straight as I'd like and I had to work to keep the blade from pulling to the left. Think I'll make another but even with that defect it out-performed the stock handle by a massive margin. Getting both hands on the larger lever makes a serious difference.
Finished that bit of the walk and headed down to the lake. Unfortunately the water was high and muddy and choppy today - not so sure about the fishing. Anyway, here's the kit.
Here's the kit with Altoids tacklebox open. Contents (because I know you will want to know) are 1) Biostrike strike putty (the yellow stuff - works like a bobber) 2) size six hooks 3) Berkley Gulp earthworm thingies 4) more fishing line on an old NRA card.
In spite of the crummy water conditions, I decided to wet a line - to practice casting more than anything. Caught this little panfish after about five minutes - I wouldn't have starved and I'm sure there were more where he came from.
The reel worked fine and it cast about as well as I expected (not great but about like you might do with a Zebco 202 and old line). Gotta watch the reel - it's subject to backlashes and those tend to waste line. Might be better off cutting a sapling to use like a cane pole but I like the handiness of this thing.
Anyway - thanks for playing along!
