I can't get the search to turn up an answer to this question...does anyone know if the TSA will OK a smallish Leatherman or similar multitool if the knife blade has been broken off? According to the latest TSA list, you can bring screwdrivers and other tools aboard in carry-on luggage as long as they're less than 7" in length. I'm not wild about doing this, but I'd rather have the pliers, screwdrivers, etc. without the knife than have nothing at all. Thanks for any info.

I don't know about the TSA rules, but I can tell you that there are also a
number of tools out there that never had a knife blade on them at all. Maybe something like that would work. Also, you can have cutlery in your CHECKED baggage.

In some European countries it is enough that an object is made of steel and can be used to stab with to be taken away from you by airport security (even if it is a simple tool and not a knife) :barf:

I may go the checked luggage route, since you can't take any toiletries in the cabin any more... :(

Like a ballpoint pen?

I actually did remove the knife blade from a LM Micra. I've carried it through Philadelphia, National in DC, Atlanta, Cincinatti and Chicago O'Hare without a problem. I did tell the TSA agents up front that they might want to hand check this Leatherman. I also immediately told them that the knife blade had been removed. Several told me that they appreciated telling them up front because they didn't have to search my carry on. It would have showed on the x-ray and they would have had to check it anyway. All in all, I was just polite and friendly and so were they. Good luck!
