Chuck, that is absolutely spectacular material. The knife ain't too bad either! ;) Is that material available?

I do not get many tooth roots but I do slab teeth for scales. My friend Dan Westlind has some for sale I sold him, his number is 360-795-0228.Attached is a scan of a knife made here in Alaska by Richard Kacsur.

Really kewl stuff. What is it like to work with and grind? Looks like stone or something. Do you need any special equipment to cut or polish it or is it similar to mammoth ivory?

With the scales the trick is to get it treated and back it with some thing. The teeth are made up of enamal plates with ivory like material between them. The problem is to dry them to where they dont come apart. After they are treated they can be worked like ivory. I carve them with my square wheel grinder.I buy 50 or 60 teeth a year but very few of them have roots. If a tooth is real nice I usually sell it to a collector.I sent some I cut for stick tang knives to Ken at K&G but I do not know if he still has them.
