Hey all, im sharpening my newly acquired hinderer at the moment and wondered what have your experiences been with 20CV using a toothy vs polished edge.

Toothy. Best results I've gotten is sharpening on coarse diamonds, 300 mesh. Then finish on a single, finer diamond grit, anything in 600/1200 range. If you micro-bevel on the finer grit, you can preserve the more toothy pattern from the coarse stone on the secondary bevel.

On my 20cv Spyderco mule I have a 17dps .5 micron (~30,000 grit) polish sharpened on the wicked edge. It still slices nearly as aggressively as a course edge, and push cuts far better. I tried it at 600 grit and 1500 grit diamond but definitely prefer the high polished edge.

Not 20CV, but the similar M390 takes a very aggressive polished edge as said above.

I went ahead and brought it up to 2k and then stropped. I like it better than the 600... although I was an idiot and accidentally slammed the edge of my stone into my edge, so there is a little nick in it now :(

both for the finished look and i found through some cardboard it push cut a bit better

It works well with either a course or high polished edge.
It all depends what you'll be using it for. A course edge will be more aggressive when cutting. Personally, I prefer a toothy edge, but a polished edge looks impressive. ;)

No experience with 20CV but some on M390. I find that this steel does well on both coarse and polished. Polished, it is still aggressive.
