Hi,

I have just started to collect knives and have realized there is a huge range when it comes to price, quality, materials, etc amongst the knife makers. As of right now i have only stayed to the lower priced knives, $150 or less. During my purchasing i have come across a couple times where i have overpaid for a production knife and also underpaid, so my question is this.

In everyones opinion, what are the top 10 production knife companies(as in SOG, GERBER, CRKT, companies that would compete with them) out there, in terms of quality of make and materials?

Spyderco
Kershaw/ZT
Benchmade
Buck
Esee
Becker
KaBar
Victorinox
Case
GEC
Old school SOG fixed blades
Old school S30V Gerber
Emerson (some can be obtained for under $150)

I do not really care for the newer SOG, Gerber, or any of the CRKT KNIVES.

Not in order, but:
Benchmade
Kershaw
Esee
Spyderco
Boker (Solingen made, not boker plus)
Case
Zero Tolerance
Swamp Rat
Bark River
Mcusta

my personal top five would be:

1: Fallkniven
2: ESEE
3: Busse
4: Ka Bar
5: Victorinox

we're in a rarefied air at this end of the knifemaker spectrum.

my Favorite production knife companies would have to be

Chris Reeve (hands down number 1)
Benchmade
Spyderco
Victorinox
Kershaw

probably in that order as well but for me benchmade and Spyderco waver depending on the model

Spyderco
Kershaw (and Zero Tolerance, same company)
Benchmade
Ka-Bar (and Becker, made by Ka-Bar)
ESEE
Victorinox
Buck
Al Mar
Ontario
Fällkniven

In no particular order. And Bradley is included by default, since they are made by Benchmade and Kershaw.

Does that count as production?

yes, crk is a production company.

re the op's question, i believe he is looking for companies producing knives in the sub $150 range.

spyderco
kershaw and zero tolerance
cold steel (triad folders)
benchmade
scrapyard
swamprat

I buy/use mostly folders and I like tough folders that can handle hard use.

* Cold Steel (triad lock)
* Benchmade (axis lock)

My personal opinion

Victorinox
Kabar/Becker
Cold Steel
ESEE
Spyderco
Fallkniven
Bark River

If you are paying $150 for a gerber you are paying too much...

In my experience for the money in order the best companies are-

1.) Swamp rat- my all time favorite, looks performance, and many options in the 150 range
2.) Scrap yard- even more options but not as pretty.
3.) ESEE- all knives roughly in or under 150 range. Best warranty in the business and great people running the show.
4.) Fallkniven- great great knives and very beautiful
Big drop in quaility after those 4 for the price.

ZT
Kershaw
Benchmade
Spyderco

The big three are the big three for a reason. Every production knife I want I can get from them.

In no particular order except for the first one, my preferences only and brands that I have allot of personal experience, there are many other very high quality brands that for one reason or another I don't buy, not necessarily quality, but that may be an aspect. However, only so much money and so many knives is my primary hinderance.

Chriss Reeve
Strider
Benchmade
Spyderco
Kershaw (the regular line, but especially the ZT line)
Cold Steel
Fallkniven
Mcusta
Busse Knives (to include Busse Kin; Swamp Rat and Scrapyard)
Emerson
