After three years on the board, I've noticed that almost all postings come down to these questions (in no particular order):

  • Is a Sebenza worth it?
  • Is Lynn Thompson a loser or a tough guy?
  • Is Mick Strider a liar?
  • Are destructive knife tests stupid?
  • I have X dollars. What knife should I buy?
  • Does Cold Steel steal designs?
  • Why do companies outsource production outside the USA?
  • Which steel is the best?
  • What knife should I buy for self-defense?
  • Isn't Company X great?
  • I just pulled the trigger on knife x, did I make a good decision?
  • What's this knife my great uncle's, grandfather's sister in-law's brothers, mother gave me?
  • Whats your EDC knife?
  • If you could have only one knife...

Maybe we could cover all those in an FAQ...

Note: Added to the list from the responses below.

Never heard of Lynn Thompson before... the rest are dead on. The problem is that there are too many people with different opinions. The only way to do the FAQ kind of stuff, will be to answer with links to the existing discussion threads.

Don't ferget, "What's this knife my great uncle's, grandfather's sister in-law's brothers, mother gave me?".

And they always have 1 post.

Am I in the ballpark here?

Is a Sebenza worth it?
Yes.

Is Lynn Thompson a loser?
Doesn't make his knives bad.

Is Mick Strider a liar?
Doesn't make his knives bad, either.

Are destructive knife tests stupid?
Only the stupid ones, which is most of them.

I have X dollars. What knife should I buy?
Sebenza.

Does Cold Steel steal designs?
Blatantly, but it still doesn't make their knives bad.

Why do companies outsource production outside the USA?
Global economics?

Which steel is the best?
More than half the time this is not a significant factor in the measure of a good knife!!!

What knife should I buy for self-defense?
A gun.

Isn't Company X great?
Usually, if it's on discussion here.

1 .) Yes, a Sebenza is worth it. And i don't even have one.
2.) Don't know
3.) Don't know
4.) No. People doing Destructive tests without safety gear are stupid. People destroying a knife just to get a replacement from the company are more stupid, and should be the subject of testing spey blades on.
5.)You should research what you most need and be happy with before you spend your money, that gives you more time to save for a knife that best suits you, OR, be able to afford a couple of them.
6.) Cold Steel does not steal designs. Knives are generally pointy at one end, dull at the other and there are only so many bends, angles and edges in between. Knives have been around since before history, and there is virtually no shape or combination that has not been tried. Yes, there are new materials. No, C.S. didn't steal anything . Is Cold Steel ethical in its business practices? If you suspect not, there are a whole lot of great "little guys " out there that will make any pointy thing you think you came up with. Even some makers who have bad reputations might do good by you, sometimes the buyers misunderstanding of the system leads them to think certain makers or manufacturers are the bad guys. Research, research, research!.
7.) Economics. America is changing. If you don't want to buy foreign, Don't If you want to keep businesses in America, Vote to keep them here.
8.) The steel that my favorite knife is made of. And the steel your favorite knife is made of. And we are both right.
9.) The best knife for self defense is a sharpened awareness with a well honed common sense.
10.) Yes, company X is the greatest! After all, you chose them.

Why can't we give all the noobs the search function one time a day, for free, to avoid all this nonsense? Oh wait, they wouldn't use it anyway. :D

Just think if the OP wanted you to actually answer these questions. That would have been awesome.

Those are all pretty spot on observations.

I love the "I have no training, but I want to be a ninja, which knife should I buy" threads.

Sharpening related.

What is/how do you use a strop.

What is the Best angle for knife x.

I have never sharpened before what sharpener would be best. (kinda like asking what steel or knife is best)

But these questions are good ones for beginners.

If anyone cares for a second that Mick Strider lied about his military history or anything, they've got way too much time on their hands.

Questions from a new guy about sharpening should always be embraced and welcome because we'll all learn something from the discussion.

I am with psycho on this...as a fairly new poster/long time lurker...I have learned alot about things that i needed to know to appreciate my knives more.

Plus...it is interesting to read the different questions/responses that often come up on the general forum even if they have been answered before they sometimes jog the memory and are fun.

Psychopomp, not saying they are bad questions just that they come up often. If anything im usually one of the first ones to respond :)
