Top 5 Books on Survival

That will will depend on what type of survival and what kind of environment. If you mean primitive survival skills anywhere in the western lower 48, I highly recommend Outdoor Survival Skills by Larry Dean Olsen.

I support the choice above. But beware it concentrates its attention mainly on desert survival teatching primitive skills as opposed to short term emergency survival (+ - 72 hrs). Following the same concept, Tom Brown's Wilderness Survival also brings excellent info being a good company to Olsen's.

If a more general view at it is required, the SAS Survival book is very good and very complete showing basic techniques for all of earth's climates. Its more a 'fight to live' than the approach used by Brown or Olsen.

The US Army field manual on survival is also good and can b found for free on the net.

Basically any reading will always be usufull, no matter how basic.

Good luck

Okay, we're talking survival here, right? Not wilderness living skills. The difference is in whether you want to be found or not.

Survival Top Five:
Lofty Wiseman, SAS Survival Handbook
J. Wayne Fears, Complete Book of Outdoor Survival
David Alloway, Desert Survival Skills(ignore the title, this is a keeper)
Greg Davenport, Wilderness Survival
A thorough reading of www.equipped.org
All of the Woodsmaster video series from Ron & Karen Hood

Okay, that's six, but two of them aren't even books, so cut me a break. All of these concentrate on survival rather than extended camping or living off the land. That's an important distinction. There are some great books, most notably Nessmuk, Mors Kochansksi, Tom Brown, the Foxfire books and others who are lumped into "survival" but really relate more to primative living.

Take care,
Chad

I would like to recommend "The Complete Wilderness Training Book" by Hugh McManners.
