Top Lock question

I just got a Model 701 Top Lock with wood inserts and a plainedge blade. It was a bit stiff at first, but some lube (Tuff Glide) in the pivot and on the button slicked it up and it fires smooth and strong.

Looking at the back of the knife, there is a space between the buttonside handle scale and center bar that gets wider toward the pivot side of the handle. The scale on the opposite side has no space, it fits snugly. I tried cinching it down with the screws but that tightens it up to much for the action to work. Is this space normal?

Overall I like it. Sure wish it didn't have that "Top Lock" engraved on the blade. Cheapens the appearance of the peice in my opinion.

J,You just hit on a big problem for our company.
By Federal and State Law(we're in Colorado),we are barred from importing or selling auto knives.
My guess would be that the gap was caused by whoever bought the knife from us,and converted it to fire automatic.
When anyone converts the knife, that person violated the warranty, because a)they altered the knife, and b)it becomes illegal to transport the knife across state lines, through the mail.
It would be my guess that when the knife was converted,it got milled out a bit too much.
Hope that answers your question.

Wow

I had no idea it was an aftermarket thing. Most be common practice. I see them around.

Yes it is fairly common. Most of the time, they are bought and converted by people who live in states where it is legal to own and carry autos.
But sometimes you find them in places where they are illegal.

What's funny is that in Europe, they are automatic, from the factory,as it is legal there.
The way to tell on the Top Locks is,the European factory autos will say SpeedLock on the blade.
But the new SpeedLock 3000 is not auto.
Thanks,TJT
