In the 3 WWII thread, Uncle, rkenny was asking about them, topis, that is. Do you have any in stock for him and what's the price?

Good Question. I have been looking for one of these for a while. Right now it is winter so I wear the tibetan wool version of a topi. When it rolls 'round to warmer weather a nepali topi would make good Khukhri fashion wear!

:
The topis also run a bit small for us westerners, sure wish there was a way to stretch them.
I am almost afraid to wetten my topi and put it on my head to try and stretch it, with my luck it would probably shrink back to its original size leaveing me more pointy headed than I am
now.

The last time Bill had a bunch of these I asked if he had one in my size, melon. Since none did, I had to pass.

I definately have a largeish melon. I would have to order LARGE. I wear like a 7 3/8s. I asked before but this might be a better place. Do the colors or patterns on these topis have any significance? Sort of like Scottish Tartans? Are there clan/family or caste associations?

Government workers ( and also others ) wear plain black ones. Otherwise IIRC what Uncle has said in the past, I don't think they're anything like as symbolic as a tartan. Having said that, I suspect outside Kathmandu the locals in different areas make some that are distinctly ( if subtly ) different. Most of what I've seen are made of material similar to neckties. Soft and shiny and floppy. Others used what seems to be like the starched collars on a cotton dress shirt, and retain their shape. And just outside Nepal in India, but in close proximity, I caught a reference to a specific "pillbox topi" and I have no idea where to go back and find the url or the local word for the type of topi. Anyway I'd bet garment factories in Kathmandu ship all over the country, but if a locally made one were worn, Kami Sherpa could tell you what region the guy wearing it was from at a glance. Just a SWAG. ( Stupid Wild-A Guess ) Maybe there are caste differences or economic differences too just like the Rep tie vs. the foulard. Comeon and enlighten us Uncle and Kami, we're waiting with bated breath!

I think that I will stick with Stetson 10X and Restols`s Diamond Horseshoe. I had one made custom from belly fur.

I liked the looks of the Aussie and Kiwi hats.

They are made from rabbit not beaver. Too inferior to consider.

The berets are absurd. No one wore those in the field. You need a brim.

If it is no good for the field, why have it?

Who is kidding whom?

Baldies might differ with you on the berets, FNG!

And a special smiley just for you, FNG.

Isn't it amazing how little it takes to turn a bunch of so-called adults into acting like little kids?
