I am a newby to this forum and also to the world of knives.....so please try to "cut" me some slack.

I just bought a Sog Topo Contour tether knife. I'm a cop, and I'm moving around a lot on duty. This knife came to me with a sheath that does not hold it in place. The knife does not "snap" into the sheath. It falls out.

I called Sog and they sent me two new sheaths that they said were a little tighter. One was....but it still is a bit scary as far as this knife falling out under my shirt and cutting up, "Officer Me".

You guys know knives! Why can't Sog make a sheath (that hangs upside down from your neck) and make it so the knife actually does not fall out of the sheath without it being pulled out?

I told Sog on the phone that I don't care how hard it is to pull the thing out when I want it, but that I do not need it to fall out under my shirt when I am running around.....and don't want it.

Can this sheath (Topo Contour) be made to hold (firmly!!!) the knife? Is there something that maybe I can do?

Forgive me if this has been answered here before. I'm totally brand new here and know zip about knives.

Thank You

Welcome to bladeforums!! :)

I had the opposite problem with my SOG Tigershark and it was fixed by flexing the sheath opening outward. Maybe you could just flex the opening inward to make it tighter?

Try a hair dryer on one of the sheaths while squeezing sheath opening together, I have heard this does well.....

I have not had a chance to check the sheath for the Topo Contour but I did look at the knife.

Most knives have something for the kydex to "mold around" so it will hold secure.

If all else fails, contact SOG again and tell them to check a Topo in a sheath before they send it to you, maybe this will work.

Thanks Guys!

Sog did indeed check the (replacement) sheath before they sent it to me. I am still not happy with its security.

I will try the methods suggested to close the sheath up a bit.

Just a comment on this: When I first "wore" this Topo Contour on duty I was not even aware that it had fallen out.....until!

Do you have any idea where the knife finally ended up....before I realized it was out of the sheath?

Get ready, people!

Inside my underpants! And I felt the ice cold blade on a place that you do not want to feel anything ice cold.....much less a brand new knife blade!

I had just won the lottery!

That is a classic !:D Your a lucky man to say the least !

That would really make you in a "different" modd in a hurry !

Make sure and heat that sheath really good to get it to bend while sqeezing it together.

be aware of overheating the sheath, kydex is like "nothing happens-I'll try more-...-oh, shit!"
just heat it only to the point where it became slightly formable - no more or it will colapse

I need to ask this before I go ahead and "heat up" the sheath:

Do I leave the knife inside the sheath while I'm heating it up (with a hair dryer), or keep it out?

Thanks for your responses.

Dan

No, leave the knife outside, mash it together while using a hair dryer, keep it "focused" on one area (near or on edge) and let up after a few minutes or less and try the fit, you can tell when the magic starts to happen, it just gets tight all at once.

Like huugh said, don't over cook it.............
