Tops Atax

Hmm... seems like a combination of an ulu and a couple of functions from a good compass.
So... why not get a good ulu and a compass?
Seriously.

TRACKER IS ON THE WAY!!!!!!!!!! YEAHHHH! i also i any fire starter emergency kit! on the atax front i wanted to know if anyboady ever seen something like this before its seems pretty funky but cool. i wanna know how it can be a makeshift bow

I'm not sure if this is the same info that is on the Tops site, but here is a link to images of the uses from Ron Hood's site. A lot of the hoodlums have this tool and i'm sure they will give you all of the details you want if you post over in Ron's forums.

The ATAX is a great piece of gear - very versatile. hafted to a pole/stick, it becomes a nice chopper/axe, but still can skin game. Rides beautifully on the belt in front, even sitting down in the car, easy to deploy from the sheath, and Ron has a whole video instruction piece dedicated to showing you all its uses.

thanks man that actualy answered every single one of my questions! i really like the atax but it has a little too much going on. maybe in the near future i'll get one but no rush

Wow I didnt realize the lil thing did so much, I might just pick one up for the heck of it.

Wow... certainly seems more versatile than I expected.
I'll have to wait and read the reviews.
I understood it was supposed to do lots of things... but is it jack of all, master of none?
The whole design seems very busy - well, hopefully someone will really test it to see if it would make a good survival tool.

seno,

I'd say as far as blade usage goes, it will handle what a big chopper to medium knife would do best - 7"-10" blade range.

The ATAX combined with a small bush blade, folder, or multi-tool/Swiss Army knife would be all you'd need in the woods.

So, it's not a jack of all trades, just the bigger ones. But it'll work for smaller things in a pinch if realy needed, just not as well.

I used it a lot in Idaho when I filmed Volume 11: Solo with Ron. I bought one from him before I left because I liked it so much. I'll post more on my usage so you get a better idea when I have a chance.

It works really well, but you won't have enough power to take anything more than small game.

We have that video we sent around on a passaround but didn't get any more people interested. Speak up and we can get it going again.

Here's the thread that got us going before: new stuff from tops that caugth my eye.

I was in on that one. Good video. I wanted to see it as more of a curiosity thing.

The ATAX is really not my thing, but Ron (I think it was Ron Hood) skillfully used it for many tasks. It can be a very usefull tool when used properly. I'd never buy one, but I certainly think that anyone interested in it would be happy using it.

it is an intense tool.

if you can sit through the thorough video, you can see why it is worth looking into - especially for gear-miniaturization.

we are so impressed with it, we are making a handle for it, for axe and poll axe style uses.

Ron Hood put a lot of brains into that odd, wonderful tool.
