i have a tops cqt automatic knife,
supposedly they will not be in production for another 6-8 months.
any body know what its worth???

I saw a couple of TOPS autos 2 months ago at a gun'n'knife show here in Kansas City. I don't know if it was the model you mentioned, but they looked pretty neat, and were quite cheap, if I remember correctly, like less than $75. They might have been a pre-production run. That's about all I can say.

I would not hold my breath waiting to hear back from TOPS, about anything..

They are the absolute worst company I have ever encountered, as far as communication goes, unless of course you want to spend the money to call them long distance.

Why offer an email address if you can't be bothered to respond to emails?

mikemck and KNIFEONE: Actually this subject, about TOPS response, time to emails, has been discussed on numerous occasions.

Very simply: Mike and Helen, at TOPS, are absolutely great people to deal with. They will answer any and all questions right away, providing you call them They are not computer folks and someone else handles their email etc.

I don't mean to get into another endless conversation about some companies not answering emails etc. The issue here is that you want to contact TOPS. TOPS has great customer service. Just call them at: 208 542-0113. Spend the buck. Your questions will be answered.

jayharley,

I'm glad that TOPS has great customer service, but I don't plan on calling them.

If they cannot or will not respond to customer email(s), then they should not provide it as an option, and thereby give the impression that sending an email is a viable way of communicating with them.

I don't like wasting my time, and that certainly seems to be what TOPS has done, several times now.

Further, of the 3 TOPS folding knives I have owned, 2 had serious problems and had to be returned for repair/exchange. In fact, TOPS still has the Thunderhawke I sent back because the ball detent cracked in half.
Sending several emails asking about the status of the return has yielded exactly zero replies.

At this point, I'm pretty disgusted with TOPS, and whatever the outcome of this latest return, I will probably learn my lesson and get rid of the #303 and the 747 that I own.

If you speak with TOPS, feel free to relay my displeasure, in the hopes that they might deem it necessary to improve their communications.

and on a completely different topic, he mentioned that the TOPs people are swamped with work due to the recent military action in Afghanistan. They're providing well made knives, in desperately needed numbers, overtime and overdrive for the boys who are out there for us. This is a patriotic duty, and I for one can stand a little tardiness for this reason.

Keep in mind that Randall and Ek, legends in the knifemaking community, stopped making knives for civilians altogether during WW2.

mikemuk: What is going on here?? This is a bit aggravating. Good peoples' (Mike and Helen Fuller) reputations are being discussed here and your voiced opinions are going in complete oposite directions. On 5/25 you posted, on this forum, the following quote (I did a search):

"The CQT Magnum folders are really tough, and so is the Thunderhawke.

Fit & finish are top quality on every TOPS folder I have owned or handled.

The customer service is also first rate, from what I have experienced in dealing with them twice now."

mikemuk: Also, I am not going to relay your displeasure to TOPS, simply because you don't want to make a phone call! Frankly I am not even sure if you have any real displeasure. One day you love 'em, the next day you don't. I don't mean to be disrespectful, and I am sure you have your reasons for your various posts. I am just not sure I understand your position. On the other hand: I guess it is quite meaninless if I understand your position or not.

jayharley,

That's a good point you make, and I can see how it might be a bit confusing, having read my earlier posts about TOPS knives. Let me attempt to clear up any misunderstanding.

Fit & finish are great on the knives I have owned from TOPS, for the most part, which are/were: CQT 711, 747, and a #303 Thunderhawke.

The 711 was almost impossible to open one handed, reason unknown. I took it completely apart to see if it was an obvious problem, could not find anything obviously wrong, and sent it back to TOPS. They ended up replacing it, at no charge to me other than the cost of shipping it to them. Also, the liner lock on both 711 was significantly thinner than the liner lock on my 747. I asked TOPS about this, and they had no reply or explanation. Understand, the 711 was thinner, but still very secure and certainly not 'thin', by any means.

The #303 also had problems. The ball detent in the liner cracked in half, and the screws securing the liner lock to the aluminum handle were all too long, and protruded from the side of the handle, by a slight amount...just long enough to catch on stuff, which made it very annoying.

The 747 is pretty much perfect, and I have had no problems at all with it.

My 747 is a very very tough and durable knife, and I would not hesitate to recommend one to anyone that asked, but at the same time I would also relay my experience with trying to communicate with TOPS.

If a company is going to provide an email address for customers to use for communication, they should reply to emails. If they cannot or will not, they should list only a phone number. Why provide an email address if that is not a reliable source of communication when dealing with TOPS?

So yes, I do really like the TOPS folders overall, but my experience with them is that they have some quality control problems, which do not seem to be common and are quite possibly very few & far between. With this in mind, I did not complain or report on such problems as they are most problably not the norm.

I am sure Mike and Helene are great people, but yes, I am quite nonplussed with the communication. However, as was posted by MelancholyMutt, TOPS appears to be swamped right now, and for the best of all possibly reasons, and this of course does mitigate some of my displeasure and clearly explains delays they might be experiencing right now.

Mikemck,

I deal with Mike Fuller almost everyday on the phone for the TAG show and SG FIVE stuff -- so anyone out here who needs to get in touch with TOPS for service or anything else, please email me at the address in my profile, and I will bring things to his attention that day -- and he will get right on it. And I will get back to you right away as well.

Best,

Brian.

Brian,

Thank you very much for your generous offer, it is much appreciated.

I do not want to be unreasonable, and yet I think that maybe I have been in this case.

It did not occur to me that TOPS would see increased demand for their knives from the military, although it seems obvious to me now that it has been pointed out.

My earlier post was written in haste, which is never a good idea, and it shows.

In case there is any misunderstanding, I do not have a problem with TOPS QC, and I do not think my isolated problems are the norm, by any means.

TOPS makes some great folders, and my actual experience with Helene and TOPS in general has been favorable.

Still, I think they should remove the email option, and list a phone number, to prevent any future problems.
