I'm considering purchasing either the TOPS Firestrike or Storm Rider, but I'm looking for opinions on the grooves that are notched on the top of the blade. How functional are they? What have you actually used them for?

 I don't know. I think it's a question you're best off emailing tops. And then let us know, I'm curious.

The little notch on some models that appears near the tip of the blade is used to cut wire, I think. I'd guess the larger cutouts are for style, but I could be wrong.

Look in the reviews section of Jeff Randall's site, http://www.jungletraining.com.

He does an excellent piece on the Storm Rider, and describes exactly what the notches were intended to be used for.

You can also call the owner of TOPS, Mike Fuller, at 208-542-0113, and he or his wife Helen will more than happy to discuss and escribe details of any and all knives with you. They are both very friendly and personable, fun to deal with.

All the Best,

Brian.

A hunter can use it to score bone. However, the Firestrike is deigned as a combat knife. Some other models have chain saw teeth, making it sawing its obvious purpose. The little teeth on this one are made to create exiting damage.
