Hey everyone wanted to ask a few quick Q's about a knife I may be purchasing. Its a tops knife I believe to be an older model. Its through a friend of mine who scored it off the bay. Brand new condition no box $50 is what he wants. Its a thick piece of steel, heavy as well and I'm looking at it as a beater outdoor knife. He scored it for more but never used it, as he prefers his LMF and he knows nothing at all really about knives. I know they go for a lot of money off the site and from what I was reading they seem controversial to some but for $50 it seems pretty reasonable to me for a knife of that size/caliber. I'm not sure though about if there are knock off tops knives? its got micarta scales with I believe blue spacers (been a while since I have seen it, and I think current models have red or white) and a kydex sheath. It says on the blade Tops knives USA- or something similar, I do not remember off hand what it says or if it has the logo on it. My question was though, as I cannot find this model online is what are the odds of it being a knockoff? Its a sort of tanto blade that has a slight curvature and shape to put weight forward in your hand for slicing- similar to a Khukri but not as extreme. It has a belt clip that is kydex on it. And I don't remember if its molded or its separately attached. No steel markings on blade, but the etching all seems crisp. Im hoping to get hands on again today or tomorrow, but not having a model number makes it hard to find out more. I cant imagine it being a knockoff, but it very well could be. What are things I should look out for when I observe it, and is there anyway to spot a fake? I mean everything on the knife down to the black finish seems really uniform and well made, so for the price I may just take the chance regardless. Thanks in advance.

Yeah Im going to try and get some of it. Any ideas on possible fakes though or things to look for on fakes? Or if there even are fakes?

I suppose it could be a fake but I doubt it. In my limited experience, knockoffs are thinner than the original. That and I have never heard of any TOPS knock off besides their Tracker model.
