What's your opinion on TOPS Knives blade coating, specifically the "black traction coating" they give their blades.

I can't understand why you'd want to give the flats of your blade traction. I thought it was best to have as little drag as possible through the cut.

they use it to cover up the grind lines which are sometimes deep and any other marks in the steel. i stripped a steel eagle down and it wasnt pretty underneath.

I didn't like it much. I sent mine to Krein for a strip and regrind. It's a much better knife now.

I may eventually strip the coating off of my Shango, especially since it's stainless. I don't mind scratches!

Mine didn't seem bad at all, but then again, I don't know how much Tom's bead blast might have fixed.

i took pictures of the blade when the coating was still visible on the bevels when i was thinning them down before convexing the edge. i didnt get any pictures of the flat portions of the knife but i'm thinking there were dimples but i cant remember for sure. i do know that you could still see where it said tops steel eagle after it was completely stripped. i didnt strip the rest of the blade until i was done with the edge. it looked good with the coating still on the flat part of the blade.
