There dosn't seem to be much talk of TOPS Knives. Wondering if there is a reason for this? Would like to hear some opinions on TOPS Knives, quality, durability, value for money etc.

I agree, there doesn't seem to be much written about them. However, I've owned 2 Tops knives (Still have one of them). They seem to be well built, no frills knives. Their micarta scales are comfortable & you can't really complain about 1095 steel when it's properly heat treated.

They're also made in the U.S.A.

kurodrago, you're kidding, right? :)
A thread from 2002 ??? That got locked for ending up off-topic!

Welcome to Bladeforums, inspector gadget. (Oh, man, does that username belong here! :) )

TOPS is a good company, with a tremendous variety of offerings. Solid products, maybe a bit expensive for some tastes. Most of the discussion of them is on specific items, rather than the TOPS line overall.

A few have come up for discussion on our Wilderness and Survival Skills forum.

Esav Benyamin,you're right it's a bit old sorry.:D

TOPS has some really cool and sleek designs. buil in 1095, is my favorite knife steel.
It has been observed that TOPS knives are a bit pricey considering their use of 1095 steel. 1095 is a good steel, but also very cheap, and it is hard to justify TOPS prices for knives made of 1095. Kabars,RAT and Ontario knives are also made of 1095 steel, and they are way less expensive.;)

All the TOPS knives iv had were good knives, i cant think of any complaints about them.

Solid materials, good designs and functional sheaths on most of them.

The wee wolf pup is a knife i get a lot of use out of

Hard to think of them being overpriced when you look at what a Busse or some of the others that are so highly touted here in the forums will set you back. I don't own one currently, bought one on a whim a number of years ago, carried it on part of the Appalachian Trail but decided I really didn't need that much knife and it was traded away. It was well made. nice sheath, good edge but it also had a bit too much of a military look for most people on the trail. A Marbles Woodcraft with it's stag didn't raise nearly as many eyebrows.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy another if I had a need or wanted a collection piece. And their smaller knives would serve well for the weekend hikes I do these days. Perhaps the Black Rhino or the American Trailmaster but they still have a military look to them and I just plain like purty...lol. I am interested in one of their folder right now tho....

Iv had 2 tops folders and they were both great, i dont know why i didnt keep them ?

The cqt 304 is one of the smoothest opening knives iv ever had

There is a very good article in the latest TK about the Code Yellow products, they do seem a little steep.

I only have the original Hoffman Harpoon, and it is great but needed its edge thinned out before it would cut well- that is one complaint I have heard a number of times. Not many of their models do it for me but I would like to try the Pasayten Lite Traveller and some axes.

They deserve some kind of award based on quantity of advertising alone, lol. Seriously, just judging by some of the people who have chosen to associate their names with TOPS, they should get a thumbs up.

I do wish they would make their axes in something besides 1095, like maybe s7, and I might buy one.

I've been looking for some info and write-ups on Top's stuff just to get a general opinion of them.

i recently bought an Outfitter's axe that was on sale at a local Cutting Edge knife store. they had it marked down to $100, so i snatched it up right away.

anyone else have one of these? - Eric

No, but I'd say you got a nice deal. I like the design, but am ambivalent about 1095 on an axe. On one hand you can have a knife-like edge, useful for guys who use their axe blade for cutting as well as chopping. On the other hand, it's not as tough as say S7 or even 5160.

Anyway, if I had the chance to buy one of those for $100 I wouldn't hesitate in the least.
