I've been shopping around for a quality machete and I've narrowed it down to a tops machete. My only worry is that it is made out of 1095 steel, while it will hold an edge longer than a 1055 or 1075 it's less tougher. And my other worry is that it hardened to a 57-58RC and a typical machete is on a high 40s or low 50s hardness. I'm afraid that tops machete might be a brittle. Educate me.

1095 is fine, but why spend that kind of money when an ontario, condor, or tramontina will do nicely.

It is a very nice machete. :)

Considering it's an 8th inch thick all the way close to the edge and I know machetes are not for batoning. Can it handle batoning just incase I'm in a wet environment and I have to get into a dry wood

It'll handle it just fine.
People baton thinner machetes all the time; I've seen it in action on thinner ones, and they were none the worse for wear. :)

I've batoned with mine. It handles it just fine. I posted a very detailed, very picture heavy review of it, and pictures after i did an extremely high, convex edge grind. It cuts like a laser and holds an edge incredibly well

The TOPS machete is literally a severely rebuilt 18" Ontario. They use Ontario blanks and then go cuckoo for cocopuffs tricking them out. Ontario machetes do run on the hard side, but it has yet to be established whether or not TOPS does the heat treatment themselves on these or if Ontario does it.

I find about 55 RC to be about the ideal for most machetes.

Read this, then decide.. make sure you look at the second page with the regrind pics

I called today and they said Ontario makes the blanks and they send it out for HT. Ontario doesn't do the HT. You seem to know a lot a bout machetes, what do you think on a S7 steel machete? Guy from survive! Knives is developing one

S7 is a tool steel. As long as it can handle the sudden stops of impacts (& i suspect S7 will do so just fine), it may end up being the standard by which all other machetes are judged. Have to wait & see. I am also curious of what 42 has to say on this.v:D

I have a Scrapyard 1311... it's made of SR101 which is at least as good as s7 in most circumstances. It's NOT a machete, but it's long enough to use as one. Personally, i don't have the slightest clue how i could improve my .230. It's already the perfect machete for machete purposes
