Does anyone know how the saw on the TOPS - Steel Eagle performs? Is it a worthy feature?

Thanks!

I'm gonna guess here...Saws on the top of larger knives either perform "OK" or suck ass...In my estimation, because Tops does make quality knives, that the Saw back feature will work to some extent.

But I wouldn't bet the farm on it...most saw backs I've seen just plain don't do the job there intended for...

Actually, they did this saw as an answer to all the other ones that DON'T work -- it has alternating teeth like a chainsaw blade, and it does work quite well. Keep in mind, though, that the saw is 1/4" in width (the width of the spine, so it'll cut a wide path). The saw on the Steel Eagle excels for notching, and was designed for special operations troops in long term jungle environments, to be a multi-use tool: sort of machete, chopper/axe, knife, and saw. The saw was necessary because sawing in the woods is much more stealthy than chopping, and so hides and shelters can be made with less fear of discovery.

I have the Steel Eagle 111, and I love it as an outdoor blade. It puts up with anything I put it through, and it has been through a LOT.

Hope this helps!

Best,

Brian.

The teeth are very wide and the stock not tapered so it takes a lot of force to saw with them. If you can chop you will be 10x faster. Though as Brian noted they work well for notching. They also fracture easily, I broke large pieces out of the teeth using them to twist-break barbed wire.

TOPS has had customers report back the teeth did not clog while sawing live pine.

I had a friend put his 107C to the test & even this smaller version it passed.
