The Tops Tanimboca appeared on my radar recently. From the specs and what I have read, there is a lot to like.

I am typically not drawn to Tops knives. Their styling and execution usually seems a bit over the too for my tastes.

But the Tanimboca changes that. I see it as kind of a no frills working knife. I did some searching and there isn’t a lot out there on it. Some but not a lot.

So I thought I’d ask here.

Specs,
Knife Type Fixed Blade
Overall Length 7.75"
Blade Length 3.63"
Cutting Edge 3.50"
Blade Thickness 0.130"
Blade Steel 1095 RC 56-58
Blade Finish Tumble Finish
Handle Material Tan Canvas Micarta
Knife Weight 5.1oz
Weight w/ Sheath 7.6oz
Sheath Included Yes
Sheath Material Brown Leather
Sheath Clip Belt Loop
Designer Goran Mihajlovic

1095, puukko style, nice sheath, seems like a decent package.

Personally, I could live without the bow drill divits. But other than that, I like it.

Its one of a limited number of TOPS knives, that I like. Not drawn to a lot of TOPS knives either. Quite a number seem overly thick. There a still a few I like though.
The Tanimboca looks like a rugged little knife with that exposed full tang. I quite like it.
I dont mind the bow drill.
Does the TOPS work better for you than the PR4 you had?
What turned you off that one, if you dont mind me asking?

I don’t have a Tanimboca yet. That is why I was seeking some feedback. On paper and in reviews it looks like a winner. Thanks for your feedback.

The online customer reviews seem mostly positive. Some folks saying the spine wasn’t sharp, with others saying it was. Not worried either way, a flat file renders that a moot point in about five minutes.

I really liked the PR4 blade. Not sure I should have sold it. I got frustrated waiting for new thicker scales. The thin scales worked well enough for me. So I probably screwed that up.

But I also have a Bark River Kephart, a Lucas Forge Kephart, and a Utility Tool Kephart. So competition is stiff in that category.

Yeah, you sound like you are covered in the Kephart department:D

The Tanimboca seems nice. Less is more. I look forward to your verdict on it.

You are the second person to use the “Less is More” analogy aboutthis knife!
I agree.

In an age when you can adjust your sneakers with your cell phone, simple is where I’m at.

Simple can be good. A great man once said, "Perfection is achieved not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away." Designs like the Tanimboca make me think of that quote.

I've never owned a Tops knife. I have no problem with 1095 steel but I've always ended up with a ESEE, Condor, or Becker instead.

I've never owned a Puukko blade shape either.

I also have a big hand (xl, 2xl glove) so I like a little bit bigger handle.
