Anyone out there know who or what is "Tora Khukuri Supplies"? I search BF and used Google with no results. They claim to be the biggest Khukuri supplier in UK. My son is looking at their stuff despite my suggesting HI as best start in curing KP.

Searched for this company on Google and BF and got no hits. Pretty low profile for largest khukuri supplier in UK.

"TORA KUKRI SUPPLIES HAVE RE-PRODUCED THIS KUKRI AS THEIR WWI MKI VERSION, AND ARE THE UK'S LARGEST SUPPLIERS OF KUKRI, WHICH ARE EQUAL IN QUALITY TO HIMALAYAN IMPORTS KUKRI"

That's a heck of a claim, as we all know

...A downright fraudulent clain to me! *NOTHING* is better or even comes close to a good HI!

I found them on EBay. That seems to be the sole outlet. And yes, the claims are great (Talk is . . .). However, you would think that the biggest khukuri supplier in the UK would show up on the Internet somewhere other than EBay.

TAL

I checked and they apparently went on E-bay on 6/3/03, and seem to have sold 11 items since then.

They currently list 6 items, 5 of which are khukuris, and only make the claim of being equal quality to HI on the next to the bottom one.

Uncle Bill has spent years trying to convince folks that Nepali knives don't have to be of the same poor quality as seen in ( for instance, some ) Pakistani blades.

Then when he finally does build a good reputation, people pop up equating their khukuri's quality to those of his. It's got to be frustrating to Uncle.

At least this time nobody seems to be borrowing pictures off Uncle's website. So far, that is.

Which reminds me - can Pendentive or someone explain how to add "watermarks" to images placed on the net so HI could do the same and prevent theft of images? Maybe using the HEE EE initials in devanagari as an overlay? It might be easier to create a backdrop to place Bill's khuks on to photograph than add a watermark.

Hopefully, when one sees the line "equal to Himalayan Imports," one will try to find the source of the standard - HI. As for (in effect), "lot's cheaper but as good," that approach always carries its own warning.

These Tora items appeared a few days ago, and Tora had nothing on EBay for at least the previous month. The boss, one "Simon," excuses the lack of hits on the name of his company as due to his website being "down" recently." (??)

I think from Khukuri/Gurkha house - we all know the bunch !!

I spoke to Simon twice, he was an alright guy but there's no way the khuks are equivalent to HI. He told me his blades are much thinner. He wished me luck with my M43 auction and it seems now that he has seen what I got for it he wants to claim his khuks as being equivalent. Guess I am a bad judge of character !!

:(

Thinner is not bad, just not as potentially strong.
I like thick on some khuks,
but wish others were generally thinner.
The older thinner khuks I've handled
-feel- much different--balance-wise.

Design differences / personal preferences / historical accuracy

Different, not better or worse.

Oops! didn't see this one until just now. I've responded on the other thread.

And thanks to you again, Pen.

As far as Tora Kukri Supplies, I see no reason to comment further. If he does get his kukri's from Khukuri House, that makes them a known quality, as that is where the now defunct Gurka House got theirs from. And Khukuri House indeed makes decent quality.

The way I see it there's no reason to knock their merchandise. HI simply ought to be of higher quality or else someone needs to have a very long, painful discussion with HI's kamis. ( As Bill's said often enough, his is a love/hate relationship with them. )

At least that's my point of view.

Hayv!!!! Cherokee for, "It is True!!!!" And my point of view as well younger Brother, and has been for a long time. The sarkis need spoken to as well!!!!

But I've been behaving myself for the last few as it finally dawned on me that Bill and especially Yangdu doesn't need this kind of criticism at this time. When things get sorted out, and they will one way or another, HI will either get their act together or go the way of Ghurka House and the others that didn't ultimely listen to their customers.
There are other companies that are jumping on the band wagon that will listen, or go the same way.
We have been asking for really decent kardas and chakmaks for as long as I've been around.
All we have gotten are bigger, not better, but I had better shut up before this turns into a rant and I will negate everything I just said.:grumpy:

Regarding Tora Kukri, we have been going for 4 years now. Our web site is currently being re-designed and as a consequence the site is off line. Our kukri are hand made in Nepal (were I visit regularly) to our specifications and are now nothing to do with the Khukuri House, although we have dealt with them in the past.
Generally our kukri come with a quarter inch stock in various shapes and sizes. For example - we had a training kukri made in the style of the M43 which has a very thin stock (to make it lighter for martial artists who train with it for long periods), but our WWI MkI kukri has a thicker stock as per WWI issue.
We are the major supplier to retailers in the UK, (we advertise mainly in UK magazines), and we supply the Armed forces from time to time also. Our kukri have been tried and tested by British forces in Norway, Sierra Leonne, Afghanistan and Iraq and they have also been used in an Amazon expedition with excellent feed back. As a Martial Arts instructor, the Kukri forms part of the weapons syllabus and it is the core weapon of my style. I have taught the Royal Marine Commando, the Close Quarter instructor to the Gorkha Commando (Nepalese Army), various friends in the armed forces and even some Gurkha friends in the combat use of the Kukri. If anyone has any further questions or comments, I am happy to answer them!!
