here's a question.

What are some advantages to an edge quench over a full quench when only the edge is heated? :D :D

No difference. If I may, Let me ask you a question. If you are heating the edges of two annealed blades, you bring the blades edges up to criltical, then quench, one you quench the edge, the other you quench the entire blade. The edges will be the same. What is the condition of the spines of the two blades? Fred

Fred, they would both have soft spines. Depending on how deep the egde quench one is quench, the fully quench one may harden farther up from the edge. If the spine isn't up to critical it will not harden. But I do know where you're coming from, the fully quenched one may have a bit more martinsite running up into the blade which may make it more springy. Alot of variables here. Note, key word here is "may" :p

No difference. But could you explain to me why you want a soft spine ? Depending how you do things you might have an annealed spine.

Hi Don, I was asking this of Mikxx1 trying to get him to view his own question from a different perspective. It helps me, to understand sometimes, if you put a question to me with a different slant. The old lightbulb will turn on. What I do here at my forge, if I am going to edge quench a blade, I heat the entire blade, then while the spine is "normalizing", I bring the edge up to temp and quench the edge.
Just seems like a rational approach, to me. Fred  I don't know you personally Don but I must say, I really like the knives you make. Great work.:D:cool::thumbup:

I don't understand what you're asking?

Sorry Fred, thought that was for me :p I think it's a good idea to heat the whole blade when doing an edge quench. Thanks for the kind words.

Either methoud will work, but with an edge quench you've got more controll over how far up the hard edge goes, with a full quench on an edge heated blade your betting that you've got the same amount of steel up to criticle temp. with the edge quench you controll what gets hardened and what doesn't. Edge quenching just eleminates one more varible.
