Most people use a forge and so do we but can it be done with Ox and Acy torch. Have heard mixed comments before. Hate to waste time if someone already knows the answer. :D

you mean you want to clay-coat a blade and heat it up with a torch? You can do it, but you won't get an even heat and will most likely get hotspots.

Kim:

I assume you are talking about clay coating a blade and using an O/A torch to bring it up to heat for the quench.

If so, then ...Yes..... I have coated blades with Satanite, then used the O/A torch to bring them up. Seemed to work pretty well and the clay stuck, but it is always difficult to evenly heat a blade of much size with the O/A torch, whether it is clay coated or not.

Hope this helps.

easy Mike that boarders, as a matter of fact :D

hot spots and even heat will depend on how good you are at it.. :)
I try not to go over a 6-7 inch blade..

most all my blades (99.9% :) ) at this size or under in high carbon I di with O/A.

Kim - The fancy hunter I posted the other day was clay coated, heated with a torch then quenched. Worked good, 4'' blade though, I wounldn't want to do one too much longer with clay and a torch. It takes longer to bring one up to temp with the clay on it and a longer blade would be a bugger :p

I'd also like to mention
to those that are thinking of using O/A for heat treating

I use the cutting tip on my O/A set up and just wean back the
oxygen from what I'd normally cut with,
some/most guys use rose bud tips and they vary in size as well
as the size of the torch itself so the heat you get from your outfit
will of coarse vary and can make a big difference in just what you
can do and do right..

soooo,
being dependant on more than ones situation and set up, to add to it,
the length and over all size of the blade, the heat you can weald
and your experience will greatly effect your outcome.. :)
