I'm impressed with the rustic look of John's torched oak. The technique gives an 'ordinary' wood like oak an exotic touch.

John, I wonder if we could impose on you to give us a bit of a run-down of the torching process. Do you think it's suited to other light-coloured woods as well as oak (ex. maple or birch)?

Inquiring minds want to know!

All the best,

- Mike

I finish sanding the handle as I normally would, then I use a "spreader" tip on a regular propane torch, keeping it moving all the time. After I get it how I like it`s looks, I use 0000 steel wool to smooth it out, followed by my normal linseed oil finish.
Here is a torched maple CB Neckmuk.

You beat me to it, I was just about to post a pic of that! I LOVE the rustic look of the torched oak/maple.

Thanks for the description, John.

C Bryant, those are some terrific Nessie pics!

All the best,

Thats a handsome knife. I still dont understand the popularity of a fat blade, but it is cool.

I want that when I get to the 5 inch model. Do most woods take to that finish or is it mostly Oak and Maple?

I`m not sure, but I have scraps of most of my wood, so I`ll give it a try and post some pics.
