Got an excellent deal on a used Supergrind 2000 Tormek on craigslist a few months back. To be frank, I’m a novice when it comes to sharpening. I’m getting better with trial and error though….

My question is regarding the angles. How do you get even grinds? If I set my angle to where I would like it, then start on the right side. Once I’m finished on the right, I start on the left side (not changing the jig position or the height of the bar), my left side angle is different than the right. I would say the left side has +/- 5 more degrees. What gives?

Hey Congratulations on picking up a TORMEK. I have one myself and love it. First and foremost what I recommend you to do is to call the company's 800 number which you can get on the internet. They will probably give you an instructional DVD that I got when I bought mine new. I can't urge you enough to watch it at least 3 times before you starting working with the TORMEK. Their instructional video/DVD is truly a great presentation and you will pick up several tips from it. The distributors I got mine from were very good to me and very accomodating.

Their website is www.sharptoolsusa.com and like I said they are good people and they will be willing to help you get started. Also I urge you to get one of their maintenance kits you can buy that has all of the preventative maintenance stuff you will need. You will love the TORMEK when you learn it. JD

Thanks, Ill contact them and see if they have the DVD. I was given the VHS version but don’t have a VHS player :(

I know I'm playing with fire when I start grinding away without knowing how to properly use the Tormek system.

The knife clamp only accommodates thinner knife blades correctly to give you reasonable symmetrical grinds, but the thicker your blade gets the more different your bevels will get.
It is a well known shortcoming of the knife clamp as used by Tormek, and already documented by professor Verhoeven in his test of this machine.

I have the Tormek T7 with the silicon Blackstone and to sharpen thicker blades i re-clamp the blade to sharpen the other side.
Use a thin pointed Sharpie to draw the outline of the clamp on the blade to make sure you clamp it in the exact same position.

My plan is to come up with a better type of knife clamp in time, but that's no easy task.

I only use the smaller knife clamp, but the effect is the same with both clamps.
It's in the design of the type of clamp

Try alternating 2 passes per side. Don't wait to form a full burr before
you switch sides. This will assist in keeping the bevels equal.
