Torn between a JYD II and RAM

I've become a Kershaw convert now. I'm torn between the RAM and the JYD. I really like the flipper on my Zing and would like another non assisted flipper. Does the flipper work well on the JYD? I've heard some say that it doesn't always open. Any advice about the pros/cons of both?

The JYD II is a much bigger knife than the R.A.M.
The flipper on the JYDII works exceptionally well while
the R.A.M. flipper system is more in line with the speed of an automatic.
Completely different blade design. The R.A.M. has a choil cutout if you like that sort of thing.
Both can be had in G-10, the JYDII's G-10 is a bit grippier.
JYDII is right-hand tip down while the R.A.M. is right-hand tip-up or down and left-hand tip-up
The HAWK lock is a piece of art in itself.
JYDII is available in Black or Grey G-10 (Black G-10 for the CB model) and Ti if you go for the SG2 steel model.
The R.A.M. is available with or without serrations in a plain or black finish blade.

I think that covers it. :D

I own a RAM and have played with JYDIIs, particularly the CB model, which I love.

First off, the RAM's flipper system (action) is far superior to the JYDII's. But this isn't particularly bad for the JYDII, since the RAM has the best action of any knife ever created, and I am perfectly comfortable saying that. So what we have here is that the JYDII, despite not being quite as fast as the RAM, is still an excellent knife action wise. I wouldn't worry at all about the flipper.

The JYDII is clearly much beefier than the RAM, and in my estimation, much grippier. They're both comfortable, but the JYD moreso, and the finger choil on the RAM lends to your finger slipping forward onto the blade, a problem that won't be seen on the JYD's huge finger guard/flipper.

That said, the JYD's lock probably isn't as strong, and it's no where near as convenient. Also, I like how the RAM looks more, and it's WAY more low profile if that matters to you. I haven't been able to play with the JYD in actual cutting tasks, but the RAM is a seriously good slicer. It's no Delica, but it's not far from it either (and far more versatile at that).

But really, they have very little in common. For a higher precision, smaller, lower profile slicer, use the RAM, for a bigger, tougher and more flamboyant knife, try the JYDII.

Or just get both. Remember that just because you get one today doesn't mean you can't get another six months from now. Neither model is on its way out.

I'll probably pick up a JYD II CB soon myself.

Anyway, rest assured, the JYDII I played with worked fantastically, and with a slight flick of the wrist combined with the flipper, it'll open very hard.

Mikes answer does cover all the comparisons between the two. I am partial to the RAM right now because it's my newest Kershaw ( I waited entirely too long on this one.) The flippers on both of these are unbelievable, The JYD needs a little TV treatment, just sit and flip it while watching TV or maybe take it apart and polish it up a little and you will be very impressed with it. The RAM flipper on the other hand is in a class by itself unreal right out of the box after about a week it's so fast and slick that it's almost impossible to make it not open!! the only way you are going to be happy is to take riffraff's advice:

Get Both.:D

You can't go wrong with either but both is so much more fun :D:D.

Get.

Both.

:D

I did. The JYDII (CB) stays in my pocket. The Ram is on a display on my desk. Next to the other 20+ knives I bought and "Just didn't have the heart to use."
I will need a bigger desk soon.:D

Thanks for the responses everybody. After getting my Zing and seeing how great the opening mechanism on it is, I went ahead and ordered a RAM.

I am not fold of liner locks. That being said, I like the overall design of the JYD better then the RAM. The RAM's lock is definitely nicer but it may not be any stronger, I just don't know on that one. I prefer the blade shape and grind on the JYD, almost full flat vs. hallow ground. I prefer the handle on the JYD and the lack of needing to use the choil that I have on the RAM, I too am concerned about having my finger slip forward onto the blade on that knife. That being said, I own a RAM and do not yet own a JYD. Mostly its due to the liner lock, I would love to get an SG2 Ti frame JYD II but do not have the money for it just yet.
