Torn Between Two Choices

Hello

I find myself torn between two final choices for my very first khukuri. I'd like to seek the advice of those experienced in this world to help finalize the decision between the British Army Service model and the WWII model. Both would work for me as choppers and hiking gear, as well as a weapon should it ever come to it.

Is there a good reason to choose one model over another? Its primary use would be clearing trees and bushes, creating camps, and processing an animal after hunting. If it makes a difference, I am a 5'11" male around 230 pounds. I'm kind of a couch potato too, so I'm not as strong as others.

Please forgive me for my naivety and thank you for your time and advice!

Either of those would serve you well, an Ang Kola or Chiruwa AK, M43 all would work.

I'd suggest watching for Yangdu's daily specials and see what appeals to you. There's a variety of lengths and weights which would matter if your packing versus driving.

Any of the Chirra's (yek, dui,Tin) would work too. So many choices.

All might help in game processing but I'd want a smaller knife as well. I've often thought the little HI Bowies would make an excellent skinning / hunting knife.

A lot of folks get a KLVUK, a villager finish khukri like what you would find in use over in Nepal. Not as refined, not polished up but a real work horse and for many even with lots of khukri's it's the first one they grab when it's time for work. I know I do.

Doubtful you'll be satisfied with just one so you can learn from the first one as you go along.

Welcome, glad you found us.

I'd recommend one of Thamar's pieces in the 24-27oz range. They are decently sized, heavy enough for chopping, but still fairly agile as a weapon.

Unfortunately I don't own either of those khukuris so I can't office advice on which to choose.

As others have said I'm sure either one will serve you well as HI blades are made to work. You just might consider how much steel you want to pack around when comparing length and weight.

Watching the DOTD is a good idea, unless your heart is completely set on those two khukuris and nothing else will do, and if you don't mind waiting for the right blade to come up. You may be like me and wind up seeing a knife you absolutely love, but didn't even know it until you saw it here. Since different Kamis have different interpretations and even considerable variances in their own work, its nice to see the actually khukuri you will receive. Unfortunately you won't necessarily see many, if any at all, of either of those khukuris come up in DOTD threads.

The WW2 model. 16.5" to 18" length, 28-32 ounces weight.

I've got both, I much prefer my BAS, but don't get me wrong, my WWII is great too. To tell you the truth, both excel at what you are intending to use it for, and will serve you well.

As others have said, many other models will work as well. Keep an eye out for the DOTDs and get what appeals to you.

As a backpacking blade, you cannot go wrong with a KLVUK, for sure. Takes abuse, tough as nails, easy to sharpen, light, and very customizable.

If you are going to field dress game, between the two models you are inquiring about, I think that the WWII may be slightly easier to use than the BAS.

You might look into the KLVUK. It's about the same size as the BAS as well. If I were going to pack ONE khuk out in the field that had to do everything, the KLVUK would be way, way up on my list. Nice fine edge, light weight for packing all day, cost effective to purchase.

Of the two you are looking at: I've always fancied the 18" WWII. Nice long grip on it for multiple ways to hold it. I'm an athletic 5'10 200lbs. But the 16.5" might pack a little nice day to day:)
