Some good fishing...

That looks awesome. ;)

Where are/were you?

The pics with the tuna were taken inside the daily fish market in Tokyo. The knives were in a shop right beside the market.

I heard that they closed the market to visitors now, so glad I got to see it. It was very interesting, and worth getting up at 4am to see.

I love fresh tuna, that one really makes me feel like an inferior fisherman though. Any idea what that one weighed?

I was there last May. The warehouse where they auction the fish is closed to the publice except for the few that gets special passes. The market is still open to the public but the whole facility will be transfered to a new location. Anyway, that place is so dynamic and the toro is always good. Got some while in the market

Thanks for he update. There's nothing better than sashimi at 5am for breakfast. :-)

This is one of the auction rooms where the tuna were/are auctioned a couple years ago when I was there. There were at least 15 other rooms the same, with 50+ tuna in each one when I was there.

At the time we were allowed in the rooms, but were supposed to "stay behind the lines" :-)

You're lucky you got to go in. I saw the auction but was outside. Good times. Wish to go back in the future :)

That was the largest caught during this years 48 hour season. My brother was the one that actually caught it. He is a commercial fisherman in Nova Scotia, Canada. That was caught in the Northumberland straight, between Nova Scotia and P.E.I.

This was caught on the 2nd day of the season. The first day he caught an 800+ pounder in the same area.

They use a technique called kite fishing. You have a kite with a release clip that you feed the real fishing line through. The kit is on another line and let out a couple hundred yards behind the boat. The fishing line goes from the big rod through the clip to the hooked bait (usually mackerel) that then splashes on the surface of the water. When the tuna takes the bait, the clip releases, and the fight is on :-) It took an hour and 45 minutes to get this one to the boat and secured.

The world record (caught on a rod and reel) is 1496 lbs, and was caught around the same area back in 1979.
