I am planning a trip to Toronto next month. I always carry a 4" knife (usually a folder) and OC. What are the possible legal problems I am going to encounter if I travel with these essentials? I hate to leave home without them. :)

Thanks,

Fred

FRED , I THINK U WILL. WITH ALL THE HUNTING LAWS AGAINST THE U.S. CARRING HUNTING GUNS ACROSS THE BORDER AND SUR-CHARGES AND ALL THAT. U MIGHT HAVE SOME TROUBLE.I'M NOT TO SURE THOUGH.POST QUESTION ON THE LAW SITE. FRANK, (JUSTRIGHT);) GOOD LUCK.

Hi Fred. I think your knife might be okay (not sure about blade length restrictions in Canada), but the OC is not allowed, if I'm not mistaken.

If I went to Canada, I would take an approximately 3" knife (Spydie Native or Delica), a SureFire or MiniMag light (for Kubotan use), and probably my cane. Anything recognizable as a S-D weapon, no matter how "less than lethal" will probably be confiscated at the border. I'd also have an SAK or small slipjoint penknife for cutting chores in public. My lockblade would stay under wraps around the locals.

And remember you are carrying your knife "as a tool."

I was in Vancouver, BC recently. For what its worth, I bought a CRKT M16-13Z while I was there!

Both times I crossed the border into Canada, they asked about guns, and yes pepper spray. Knives were of no concern. I have a feeling OC might be bad juju. The knife you shouldn't have any trouble at the border, but as for the legalities of carrying, I've got no idea.

Also, driving into Canada, they never searched anything, just checked IDs. Coming back to the US, they just asked us if we were US citizens, and wavied us through, no check.

On the way back in a week later, they didn't check my bags, just asked questions. On the way home, they x-rayed my backpack (I was on a bus) at the border. I had 2 cameras, a laptop, 2 knives, cables, all manner of electronic crap, and they didn't even slow down on it.

OC and knives aren't illegal in Canada; weapons
are. Don't carry anything with intent. Carry OC
for dogs, carry a folder for opening boxes. The
combination of a folder and OC may attract some
attention if you're searched, but on the other
hand, you won't be searched unless you attract
attention (and, despite guarantees, you always
may be searched illegally).

I say carry, remember they are *not* weapons.

just to let you know.....i'm from Toronto.

Are you sure, I read somewhere that in Canada, there is no lenght limit. Or is this something "exclusive" to Toronto?

[digidude], take a look at the dates on the rest of this thread you resurrected.

The man you're addressing last posted on BF on 9-04-2001. :D

What is called a "prohibited weapon" is a federal law. (switchblades, balis, flickables to make it short)

Lengt limit, possession, etc is a city law. Took me 3 weeks of phones and emails to know what I was allowed to carry.

So, listen to that guy from Toronto :)

Yeah, I tend to get varied answers on length here in Canada as well. Like it was mentioned earlier the big issue is purpose/intent. The general consensus with police I've talked to seems to be that the only time a cop is really gonna see your folder is if you use it or a search is neccessary. So as long as you don't do anything to warrant being searched blade size shouldn't be much of an issue. I've also of all the legal lengths i've heard stated down here none have been under 4". Anyway, that's just my 2 cents. Enjoy your trip.
