i was wondering if anyone can give me info about the knife laws in Toronto and Ontario in general. i'm planning on heading there in a couple months and want to know if i can bring my tenacious along. i live in NYS. any help?

your tenacious should fit in nicely
im in St. Catharines which is about an hour south
of Toronto
and iv never had a problem with mine.
Welcome to Canada EH!!!

No problem.

If questioned, the knife you carry is for use as a tool only right? eg. opening letters, boxes ect.

fyi I don't know of anyone pulled aside because they were carrying a knife at random, there are usually circumstances surrounding detention.
There are no local laws in Canada in regards to carrying a knife . There are laws that fall under federal jurisdiction such as carrying a weapon dangerous to the public etc. The average Joe carrying a knife down the street on a clip in his pocket need not fear, a knife(tool) is a knife is a knife until such a time as proven to be a weapon.

now, carrying the same knife en route to your girlfriends house with whom you've just had a domestic dispute and threatened to kill, now your into a bit of hot water (weapons dangerous, utter death threats).

Incidentally, what is your business in Canada, a girl? You Yanks best just stay away from our women folk.

If the knife can be 'flicked' open, without using the thumb hole, there is a risk that the border agent will confiscate the knife. (if they decide to take a closer look at you, and notice the knife)

Other than that, you should be fine. I've carried various folders for years and have never been asked about it.

Not true. Municipalities can and do prohibit the carrying of knives. They are usually blanket bans regardless of the kind of knife and for any purpose.
There's a part of Montreal that bans all knife carry. I go there all the time and carry a knife. They can fine me if they like, fuk'em.

What part of Montreal is that? I thought it was basically the whole island that was a no knife zone (unless it's for your job, etc.).

And as you were saying, I'm pretty sure knives are a no-no in most municipalities, and like you, "they can fine me" is what I say.

It is my understanding that CANADIAN LAW regarding knife carry is based on intent and secondly on concealment. It was also my understanding that a federal law can not be overuled by provincial or municipal laws or bylaws. If a cop wants to be an ahole he can give you some grief over concealment but as long as you are not waving it around in a bank or bar you'll win in court. Quebec thinks they're a separate country so who knows about them ;-)) I carry a straight knife on my belt at all times and a slippy on the other side in a sheath so never concealed and I never get hassled, however I live in the boonies where everyone has a knife in their pocket.

Best regards

Robin

Provinces and municipalities are totally able to enact laws. I'll give you some examples:
-In Ontario, when you buy ammunition, you have to write your name, address, and the quantity and caliber of ammo that you are buying. No other province has this law and it's nowhere in the Firearms Act.
-In Quebec, if you want to own a restricted firearm you have to take a special course that you don't have to take in any other province.
-In Calgary, open carry of any knife is a bylaw infraction.
-In BC body armor is prohibited for civilians.
-Radar detectors are not prohibited federally, but half the provinces have a ban.

I could go on and on, but you get the idea.

What I was saying is, if there is a federal law regarding anything a province or municipality is leaving themselves open to a supreme court arguement. The problem is taking anything to the supreme court is costly.
In Sault Saint Marie the metis to the hunting act to the supreme court and won the right to hunt Moose at any time for food.

Anyways, I never have a knife on my body, it's always at the bottom of my backpack in a leather sheath. I carry a Buck 110 in case I need to open something or cut an apple open. I've never had anyone tell me to open my bag and I doubt it's ever going to happen.

You will have no problem carrying a Buck 110 on your belt in Toronto or anywhere else in Canada. Just behave normally and you will be fine.
