Ah, the lovely balisong. Enjoy its fine lines and intelligent design - just not in Canada.
As I understand it, the balisong is "illegal" throughout Canada as a result of a Supreme Court of Canada decision[R vs. Vaughan] which decided that, in short, even though it might require more than one operation and would take considerable practice and skill, a balisong or "butterfly knife can be opened "automatically by gravity or centrifical force" and therefore is a "prohibited weapon" under s.84 of the the Criminal Code. Under s.91(2), it is a crime to possess a prohibited weapon without a valid licence. I explain s.91(2) a little more in a previous post. Somewhere and about a year ago a posted an explanation of the jursidiction and procedures of Customs concerning the importation of knives and "weapons". The balisong isn't likely to make it through.
I'll spare you the details, unless you really want them. The anti-butterfly knife decision [R. vs. Vaughan]makes no sense, for several reasons, but its effect has been to mark the balisong as as much of an outlaw as a switchblade, in the eyes of many. And that makes even less sense for the balisong than it does for the automatic opening knife, but who are we to argue with the Powers?
