Torsion troubles

Hi all,
I recently picked up my third Leek, the D-2 composite model, from a forum member who had "used it lightly."

It came very dirty, so I took it apart and cleaned it up. During the cleaning, I noticed that there is a small hole in the metal where the torsion bar acts, near the hole for the pivot (I know this hole is not supposed to be there because it is obviously not machined... sort of a jagged break)... I will post pics when I get a chance.

I should note that the Speedsafe was very sluggish before I took it apart. I put it back together after a thorough cleaning and oiling, and the Speedsafe didn't improve at all. If I don't give it a very hard flick, the blade will not open all the way. All of my other Kershaw's with Speedsafe have been 10x better than this one.

Again, I will post pics when I get a chance, but I am wondering if I will be able to use Kershaw's warranty on this? I know I am not the original owner, and I also do not have the paperwork or box with it, but I always hear about their great customer service. I have been happy with all my Kershaw's thus far, but I am wondering if Kershaw can do anything about this one.

As spiral said, don't worry. Since you're adept at taking them apart, just call Kershaw tomorrow AM and have a spring sent to you.

As for the warranty, the knife is under warranty, not the owner!

Here are the pictures of the hole in left side of the pivot hole...
I just sent a request on the Kershaw site for an extra torsion bar...

Sorry, I misunderstood you. Call Kershaw, and then send it back. It should still be covered. I'd put it back together and send the whole knife back. They'll repair/replace what's needed, tune it up and resharpen it for you.

swimmerdude...definitely send it in to customer service.

I have one Leek (out of many that are just fine) that also wore this same way...I was never sure why but suspected that the pivot screw might have been a little loose allowing the liner that holds the torsion bar in place to move away from the handle and let the torsion bar squeeze into an area it normally doesn't sit in near the pivot, causing wear there...once that wear spot is there, then it binds, even with extra lube.

My short-term solution was to remove the torsion bar and make the knife a manual opener, secured by the tip lock if/when in-pocket, but I really need to send mine in to be fixed.

Ray :)

Ray, and all the others,
Thanks for the excellent advice. I will be contacting Kershaw tomorrow to try and make an arrangement for this to be fixed... hopefully all will turn out well.

Dawn will most likely be the one taking care of you. She's great, definitely email the pics to her and you will be happy with how fast you will get a reply. and don't worry, all will be well. its kershaw@!!!!

Has anyone else taken a look under the hood? Mine has the same hole.
Came that way. I think my TiZDP also has it. There was a similar post
about the same thing when the CB first came out. I can't remember who
posted it but we compared notes. Mine fires open fine.

That hole don't look natural...perhaps Thomas or Tommie or even, dare I say it...CRAIG GREEN will address this!

Interesting...perhaps this particular hole is not the result of wear or associated with the sluggish firing if it's always there? I've only opened up the one G10 Leek that wan't firing properly...it definitely feels like it binds when the torsion bar is in place and on mine the hole looked like wear, but perhaps the cause is elsewhere...;)

Anyway, I kind of like it as a manual...:D

Ray :)
