Torture tested my knife

I accidentally broke 1 of my blades yesterday so I figured I would go ahead and torture test the broken piece. I took about a 3 inch long section by one and a half inch wide by .065 inch thick piece of the blade and put it in a vice and bend it over with a pair of vice grips and it bent 90 degrees before it snapped. The first time I bent it to 90, I let go and it sprung back to about 5 degrees. I was able to drive it into the corner of my vice with my hammer with a little damage to the edge, but it drove in about 1/8 inch and stuck there.
Question: what did I do wrong to make it not spring back perfectly?

I dont think any blade can go a 90 degree bend and return to 0. Ive never seen one myself that can.

No, it won't return to zero. Each time you bend it, there will be more metal "fatigue" and pretty soon the blade will snap. You have a LOT of variables going here...

Thanks guys. I just found the American blade smith society journeyman test they perform on knives, and lookin at some videos theirs don't bend back either.
