Last year about this time we threw some handle scraps in a bottle of water and let them sit. Today we opened it up to see what effects being submerged in water would have on 'em.

Top to bottom, left to right, they are:
1/4" white paper micarta,
1/8" natural canvas micarta, 1/4" natural canvas micarta, 1/4" nat. canvas w/ orange pinstripes (superglued),
1/4" black canvas micarta, shadetree herringbone burlap, shadetree drunken burlap.

The results? Simply put, they were just wet on the outside. Aside from a slight separation of the orange pinstripe from the canvas micarta, none of them displayed any issues whatsoever. As Vance put it, "it looks like you just cut them on the table saw." Strong materials indeed. Hopefully the results of future tests will be as boring as this one.

For future tests I want to see how the different steels hold up, as well as the epoxy and super glue we use. I'd also like to get some Atlantic/Pacific ocean waters and put things in there to measure the effects. Anybody live on either coast that could hook us up w/ a bottle of sea water?

I could get you some dirty Gulf Coast water :(

Impressive. I would love to see you guys throw some stabilized wood in there as well for a next test, kinda beats having to do it myself, with mah knives..

I'd be happy to send you guys a bottle of North Sea if you'd like :D

Duh

That's what I get for not reading kens posts

I'll try telling my wife that we "need" to take a vacation to Maui so that I can collect a mid-Pacific water sample for you. Who knows, it might work. :)

Also, given what I know about the drinking taste of the crew and many of your faithful customers, perhaps you should soak some test samples in a nice hoppy IPA with a little BBQ sauce mixed in for good measure. :D

How much do you need? Can get Atlantic water if you want it?

That would be great. A pint or a quart would be plenty.

Great idea. This batch was all synthetics, but I'll do an entire batch of woods, stabilized and exotics, and we'll see what happens.

Yes sir, we'll take it!

Phil, I think we will be needing some Maui samples as well. Please tell your wife that we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience of such a trip.

Now let 'em sit in the GA sun for a long time and see the results? Just a suggestion. Or even other pieces that have not been submerged in water for a year.

Hey Ken, If you supply the knives, I could put them through a DEF STAN 24hr Salt Spray Test! Not sure you will want them back though.

+1. I can send some of Australia's finest from the south coast :)

That's a great idea. Maybe we'll hang some test pieces outside the shop. Thanks.

I have no idea what that is but we'll take you up on it. We can send over some dud blades. Sounds cool.

I'd be happy to shoot you guys over a bottle of the pacific ocean's finest

Yes please!

We'll take it! Just hope we aren't breaking any import/export rules... Do government's care about ocean relocation?
