Torx Driver Set?

Hi,

I'm looking to buy a set of torx drivers for changing pocketclips, adjusting pivots, etc. I've noticed that most sets do not include all of the sizes but only a selected few. Which sizes are most common in knives? I want to make sure I don't buy a set only to discover that it doesn't include the one I need.

For reference, I need to be able to unscrew my BM710, BM Griptilian, and Rat 1.

Thanks in advance!

Ive had some cheap ones which snapped after a few uses. Got a benchmade Torx set and its awesome for what it is. I think i got it for $10

I got the wiha pico sets. I bought both t1-t8 and the t5-t20. itll set you back 80-90 bucks depending where you purchase but you'll have some great tools for working on your knives. you'll also have double of some of the sizes.

learned about wiha here on the forum. only good things said about them so I figured I couldn't go wrong.

Thanks for the quick replies. What sizes specifically do you recommend as a must have? I see a lot of sets don't have T5.

Also, do you think I should get a set of tamper resistant ones so they'll work on normal and security torx bits? The problem with this is, I think most security sets start at T8H...

I bought a set at Walmart that has a T1-T10 and a lot of other sweet tools for like 12 dollars it was a 44 piece set

Do NOT get whatever set happens to be in the hardware store. I made this mistake with the cheap Torx bits and they crumbled within a few months. They wouldn't fit well, either. I'd recommend a set of Wiha bits; they're made of hard tool steel that's been properly heat treated and should last you. And they're not that much more expensive than the other bits online. I got the model with T5-T10 bits that store inside the handle and attach with a magnet. The T6 and T8 sizes are the most common with knives; every once in a while you might see a T10. I've had a couple vintage or weird ones that use a T7, but that might have been an off-spec screw.

The number of people who spend lots of money on quality knives then maintain them with garbage tools always makes me laugh.

Wiha sets aren't even expensive.

Who uses security Torx screws on pocket knives?

Get the $5 Husky set from Home Depot. That is all you will need. It is of good enough quality very servicable and has a lifetime warranty, if/when it wears out, just bring it back to Home Depot for a replacement.

+1 on the Home Depot 8 in 1 torx set. I've had the set for about 5 years and it's performed great.

It's held up just fine and as long as Home Depot or Husky is in business to cover that warranty if ever needed, $5 may be all I'll ever need to spend on a Torx set. If not and both companies tank, I'll get that Wiha everyone is raving about.

At Harbor Freight I picked up a $5 screwdriver kit that comes with 44 heads. It has everything from T1 to T9, and a bunch of smaller phillips and flat heads.

I am thinking he was considering the versatility of it. Such as using it on other things that do use security torx screws not just knives.

Yeah I'd primarily use it on my knives but I figure why get normal ones when you can get security ones that work on both? I checked out Wiha and the smallest security size they have is T7. Couldn't find anything with Husky either.

I did find a "Torx Star Security Bit Tamper Proof Wrench Set 9-pc T6 to T27" that comes in the L shape like Allen wrenches that could work. This is from CMLSupply and it's 5 bucks. Dunno how long it would hold up.

You will need a T6 for the clip and some scales, a T8 for some scales and a T10 for the pivot screw. The Benchmade "Blue Box" set has what you need and is fair quality. Wiha is top notch. What ever you use. make sure the driver is seated well with good pressure into the screw and go slow. If you round off the tip of the driver you can grind off 1/16 inch and try again. If you round off a screw though you'll have trouble. You won't come across many security torx screws. Have a great day. Mike

I've got a couple set of screwdriver kits now.First one was the 30pc Radioshack set on sale for $10 with just about every style and size bit.Next was the $5 Husky 52pc set assortment from Home depot, all the bits are marked Chrome Vanadium,I don't believe they are now.My latest is the $7 Ultrasteel 44pc set from Walmart which is also marked CR-V.The bits fit better than the other two sets and are of decent quality. Until the T6 just snapped, exactly like the others.

Don't get me wrong,I would buy another set from Walmart. From what I see it's screws that are loctited that are the problem and the bits are over torqued.
