OK, still workin on the G-10 checkering, but trying to decide how to fasten the scales onto the fixed blade, full tang knife. I think I want scales that can be taken on and off, so that I don't have to worry about the tang rusting. Is this reasonable, or do I really need to epoxy the scales on too? If I don't need epoxy, then how should I put the scales on, barring rivets? I wanted something with a Torx or Allen head, and I can find plenty of screws, but nothing for them to tie into on the other side of the knife. My latest idea was to tap the holes on the tang, and use torx fasteners on either side of the knife. Anybody got Ideas?

I know this is a really basic question :o , but this is my first knife, and I am a first-time knifemaker. I would really like some input :D . I think the TOPS knives have what I'm looking for, Anybody know what I can do?
Thanks

Here's another one of those topics with lots of conflicting ideas. :D I guess it would depend on the reason you want to be able to take the knife down. If it's to prevent rust, epoxy will do that perfectly. If you built a cutout under the scales to store survival stuff in, that's a decent reason to be able to remove them. Some people just like to build knives that can be taken apart, and that's a fine reason too.

As to where to get torx screws, try the knife supply houses, they have all kinds of screws in lots of sizes. You'll want a tap too of course, and if you're really into it, a counterbore bit.

Sorry this one got away from me, we're usually more responsive! But I suspect now that I've gone flapping my jaws someone else will offer more ideas.

Good luck on your first knife!

Thanks for the help. I guess I'll go the epoxy route, I just wasn't sure if that would prevent rust and the edges of the handle. Thinking about it though (something I should do more often) The epoxy will cover that too. Someone told me that the strain on the handle made it neccesary to have epoxy along with the screws. Is that true?
Thanks a bunch. :D

I think either one would hold the handle securely, though the epoxy would be stronger I think. You'll grind and polish the epoxy off the spine of the knife when you're finishing the handle though. About all you can do to prevent surface rust is take care of it. But any non-stainless will discolor over time; that's part of its character.

Keep us posted, you're about to get hooked. :D

Just because you say it is your first knife.

Have you drilled a bunch of holes in the tang. I drill many small holes in the tang then the scales through the holes so they line up. Just a 1/16 or so depending on the thickness of the scale. The appoxy fills the holes in the tang and the scales and keys it all together. I also have a couple of pins to give a bit more mechanical strength..
