Hey guys, I'm a total noob when it comes to Busse's and pretty much most fixed blades, but I definitely wanna change that. I've got some knives that i've been workin up the food chain with (SOG, Buck, Benchmade, Microtech), but it's time for a real fixed blade. After reading the forums the past few days I'm pretty set on a Busse, they look awesome and like they can handle almost anything.

That said I really don't know where to start with. I like the look / size of the Satin Jack's, HOFSH'S (I think that's the correct acronym), and SFNO's. For now the knife would mainly just be the start of a collection, but when I go camping / packing over the summer I'd definitely take it with me. Are these practical for that use? What are your guys's recommendation for a Busse starter?

Any knowledge you can impart upon me would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

my experience with the larger blades is limited, i prefer the smaller busses, but plan to get a battle mistress soon. that said, i do have a swamprat battle rat that i have used as a camp knife. fantastic knife, used to chop wood, beer cans, chicken bones, whatever.

the knives you have in mind would probably serve you just as well. the only problem is finding one. since they are no longer made, you will probably have to find one on the exchange here or on ebay.

welcome to the busse forum!

You won't regret getting a busse blade. They are great to collect, but better to use. I would recomend going after a Hell Razor as these can still be had at reasonable prices on the secondary market. They came out at a base level of $287, and there have been several selling at under $400, so keep your eyes open and you should be able to pic one up.

The HR makes a very good all around knife and camp blade. I have a Mud Razor which is pretty much the same knife without the grooves and love it. Got some workout pics on the way to, used it all afternoon and still shaved hair after.

Good luck with your search.

Of the three you mentioned, I would go with a Satin Jack Tac for a first Busse. It is an intermediate size knife and as such will be more versatile than the others. The SFNO is also intermediate in size, but the SJ will be much easier to find on the secondary market and more reasonably priced. The larger and smaller Busses become more specialized to a few tasks as you go up or down in size. There will be plenty of opportunities to buy more specialized Busses after you become addicted, as you likely will.

There is an important exception to the above advice. If you really think that you are going to want a large Busse, go to the Busse Combat web site and order a fusion Battle Mistress now, while it is still available. Heck, do it anyway, as you will later wish that you had.

I'd have to agree on the SJT. It feels great in hand and seems to be the perfect mid-size knife that can handle big and small tasks equally well.

Good choice to get a Busse. They are ideal for the beat up work. If you can get your hands on a SFNO take it if I were you. IMO it's the best camping knife. Take a FSH if you want to do more chopping.

Just my 2 cents . . .

What type of timeframe is there with the Battle Mistress? I'd probably order at the start of November in about a week (have been considering it). Thanks for the help guys!
