just thought you guys might be interested in this -

just got an email from "payments-messages@amazon.com" about my account being frozen due to possible identity theft. it states that i need to renew my information to allow them to go ahead with the investigation into it. sooo, i follow the link, and it takes me to what for all intents and purposes looks like an amzon.com page - where it asks for my credit card information. except one thing -

it asks for my atm pin number. DONT EVER GIVE YOU PIN NUMBER TO ANYONE.

so i go to amazon.com proper and find that my account is most certainly not frozen , and that email probably has nothing to do with amazon.com proper.

so beware of such an email - never give you pin number to anyone. if you get an email asking for your credit card info, check the main site first, and never EVER give out your pin number.

i post this because i have an active amazon account, and the initial email scared me because i have other peoples cards on my account from a lont time ago when they asked me to order stuff for them.

heres the email:

I get similar ones from someone posing as Ebay. I send back with a few select colourful words and tell them that there is nothing wrong with my account.

Hogs beware.

Funny thing, I got the same notice at my yahoo e-mail about my ebay account. There is no reference in ebay for my yahoo e-mail account. They are always fishin....

Good thing to bring up.

I'll leave it here for a while, then move to Community with a re-direct, as this is something all the hogs, hogettes, and piggies need to be aware of.

Thanks Josh.

thank you as well :)

also scared me because i put in my number, the crv number on the back, and then stopped at my pin... had the pin not been there, i very well may have sent it...

For what it's worth, it's best not to respond to any form of junk mail. Many times they are just sending out email to thousands and thousands of random addresses and wait for a responce. The responces are recorded as active addresses and then you become a target of even more spam. It's all automated, so no human will ever see your response anyway.

Best to leave a sleeping dog lie in this case.

ebay ones should be forwarded to spoof@ebay.com and the same goes for spoof@paypal.com for paypal fakes. the scam is called fishing, they send out tons of emails hoping that someone out there will fall for it. once ebay/paypal gets notified through the spoof service, they then take the steps to have the associated website shutdown.

[nitpicker] Actually, it is called phishing.[/nitpicker]

But otherwise your points are correct.

I have been away for awhile but first I have to say... As many of you know I run the criminal Investigations for eBay and we take care of the large scale cases which include spoof.

I cannot tell you how stoked I am to see so many on this forum not only knowledgeable about this fraud trend but giving PERFECT advice to others. I wish other message boards and users were as spun up as you guys are would make my job so much easier...

On another note I just returned from China and other countries helping get law enforcement up to speed on electronic crime investigations. Unfortunately I came down with a nasty viral infection that hospitalized me for awhile as the docs pumped me full of antibiotics via IV. Was pretty ugly for awhile and painful this particular type attacked my lil blood cells and bones so I was hurtin for certain...

I leave for Europe on Sat the 1st. One of my tasks will be to help the Romanian cops where most of these spoof sites come from. Good news is we have had massive successes over there and currently there are about 150+ of them in custody there. Romanian prison is not a great place. I'll go visit most if not all of them and interview them for intelligence purposes. We have also had some big arrests of Russian organized crime types in Cyprus and other places they have been extradited here to Nor Cal and I have been assured they will get long sentences. My team is on the job we are changing the way foriegn law enforcement works and goes after bad guys that victimize US citizens... Not bragging just telling it like it is. I am also VERY proud of my guys at work. Tireless folks...

One last Work note. One of my investigators who specializes in investigating those who use online payment systems to sell and purchase child porn had a case go into arrest phase. 200 arrested globally including many religious types, teachers, doctors and unfortunately even a few cops. One decided to kill his beautiful wife before going on the run. US Marshalls got him thankfully... Anyhow 200 dirtbags off the streets many of them in professions where they have contact with and or authority over kids. More arrests to come too...

Anyhow that is my life recently, travel and more travel but when we train cops on electronic crimes and how to out hack the hackers and arrests follow it is so worth it. I am rambling and will shut up now just wanted to say thanks to those of you who are locked on and teaching others how to be safe online...

Now I am off to figure out how I can sneak an AK 47 blade into the house. I just saw them for first time on site today YowZa!!

I got a similar VERY OFFICIAL email from eBay. Bottom line someone got my password and was selling a truck that I had sold 6 months earlier, but under my name. He asked for payment to be sent to Germany. Before I caught this he had collected payments from three people that sent money. This was turned over to Internet Fraud division but there is nothing they can do when money goes out of the country. BE VERY CAREFUL. Even when you believe it is your account, it may not be. This did not cost me any money but it pissed off a lot of folks that thought I was in on this until I could prove it was not me. Some people will do anything for a buck.

I have gotten the same ones for my ebay account. I always check my account when I get something like that. Damn people, if they spent as much energy in the pursuit of honest labor, they would probably be millionaires!

Glad to hear you're feeling better. Also great to hear that you are meeting with great success running down these jerks. And no worries about the AK. Have it sent to me so you don't run the risk of upsetting the wife.

Shane - always glad to help.
