What does everyone reccomend for a tough automatic? Preferably D/a and out the side. It must pry, chop, slice, dice, stab, and will get extremely hard use.

Extremely hard use?

www.severtech.com

Anything other than a tanto will be double the price though. Not available as a D/A.

For a hard-use D/A, you could go with a Microtech LLC or Terzola, but personally I'd be hard pressed to do anything to such a beautiful (and expensive) knife. Plus, these are linerlocks, which while they are quality made, might not hold up to "extreme" usage.

The Severtech is pure business. A2 tool steel for the blade, and everything about the knife screams BEEFY. A standard black/black will cost $250, and has a full lifetime warranty. Partial serrations will add $50. There isn't much the blade won't be able to handle including chopping and prying. Do a search for Severtech and you'll see how tought this knife is. The only reason I don't have one is I don't care for tanto points.

They're made right here in Tucson. There's a fellow here who's so overzealous in his promoting of this knife that he calls himself Severtecher. He's a bit of a blow-hard, but everything he says about the Severtech is true.

(Just kidding, Kevin :p )

Another one to look into is the Desert Knife Works Sandshark (also made in AZ), a O-1 tool steeled DA OTF. But they're very difficult to find, and very expensive if you can. Plus, there's no pocket clip, so carry is difficult (and it's a beast of a knife anyway).

I can't think of any other tool-steeled (which is what you'd want) production autos.

Strider doesn't make an auto. Neither does Busse. You might try Severtech, but it's not D/A.

Autos are inherently more destructible than folders, which in turn can't take the damage a fixed blade can.

There was video (on edcknives? IIRC) of a Sandshark being repeatedly stabbed into a 55 gal drum multiple times and then operating fine. If I could carry autos, I'd buy one of those.

www.videoknife.com actually, but they ( www.pvk.com ) doesn't sell the Sandshark anymore. The only vendor I know of that sells it is www.888knivesrus.com but they only have the clip point version. There is a tanto point version of the Sandshark, but again, good luck finding one. I can't even find contact information for DKW. I don't even know where exactly in AZ they are.

I would say something from Dalton, if you want a DA the Jackal is a DA side opener. I don't have one of them, yet, but the others I have seem quit tough. The LCC DA is also real nice, but probably not as tough as some of the other options.

I too don't have a Severtech because I don't really like tantos. Well, that and I don't have any moeny. ;)

Excellent choice Planterz.Severtech is the one to get. Unfortunately the last run Aaron made is sold out. I am not sure when the next batch is coming. I will see him next week and ask. Sometimes you see one on the exchange forum. I have two coworkers looking for some but they can't have mine. :D

The Black Knife from OX.
Won't break the bank, and is one tough duty proven tool. Sorry it's not Double Action. For D/A look at a Microtech Socoom, not all are D/As.
Some SOG knives may also fit the bill

Didn't Jerry say something to the effect that the fastest folder (or auto) is still slower than a fixed blade coming into play?

Rob

I have a handfull of autos. The Benchmade AFO is about the toughest one that I have. If your going to be prying with a folder then I would have to suggest a Strider/Buck Strider. They're not autos but they're the toughest folders I've ever handled.

yo man,

I have to say the Emerson wave has made all my autos look a bit silly !!! "its like pulling a fixed blade from your pocket" to coin a phrase !!

I second that. In your shoes, i would think about a change to a little fixed or a fat folder.
