Tough decision - Combat Karambit vs. waved Delica

Hay Ernest and knife fanatics.

I have been surfing these forums and the spyderco/emerson websites crazily over the last 3 months. You see, my Matriarch of 6 years, is in need of retirement and I am so conflicted on what to do!!!

I love Spyderco but recently I bought my dad an Emerson combat karambit for his birthday. It has a waved feature and is the fastest waved knife I have ever seen!

I read a review on the sharpness of the Delica family and the author confirms that the quality and grind of the blade makes it one of the sharpest blades around!

I am so confused :( . I can’t afford both because here in South Africa they are very expensive. So I have to choose one :(

My question to you is:

Which one would you get? Baring in mind that the karambit is double the price.

This message will also be posted on the Spyderco forum

I would go with the waved Delica because it is more friendly for everyday use.

The spyderco forum replies also voted for the delica.

Wish I could afford both :(

The karambit is so fast to deploy.

of the 2 i would go with the waved delica myself, but i dont like kerambits at all.

I have a karambit as my EDC. I love it. It is more usefull than you think. plus it can go places where there is an under 3 inch blade law. Such as maryland and many cities.

I would get the Karambit. Call me an elitist, but I am more into higher-end knives and materials. The Delica and Endura do not really interest me. I have a Pacific Salt (the same as the Endura III) and a Native, and while they are great knives, I don't really find them interesting enough to carry. An Emerson Karambit would at least give me a bit of a "nice knife high" while the FRN Spydercos would not. I used to be into inexpensive, effective knives like the Delica, but I have moved on and want better materials and am willing to pay for them.

However, I have many knives and mix up what I carry all of the time. I am not sure I would want a Karambit as my only EDC knife. Since this will basically be your only knife, a Delica or Endura would be more practical. Also, while I would get the Karambit, I already have a Pacific Salt and Native. If I didn't, maybe I would want a Delica before an Emerson Karambit.

I would take this: "I read a review on the sharpness of the Delica family and the author confirms that the quality and grind of the blade makes it one of the sharpest blades around!" with a grain of salt. Of course Delicas are sharp, but I think the inherient sharpness is being overrated here. Spydercos come very sharp out of the box, but there is nothing magic about them. There are countless knives with very similar blade geometry as a Delica, and they cut just as well when sharpened well. Countless knives with very different geometry cut just as well too, and many cut even better. The Delica is not one of the sharpest knives around unless "one of the sharpest knives around" means it's somewhere in the top several hundred or thousand. There are just too many sharp knives out there (and of course the Delica is one of them).

what about a Commander Kerambit or CQC Kerambit? That would give you the flexability of a normal blade, with the kerambit grip and Wave functionality.

I liked the Commander/CQC blades better on the Kerambits myself, but I've always had some trouble sharpening my old Combat Kerambit.

from what i understand about the concept behind kerambits the hooked blade is an integral part of the whole package, without the hook ya just have a sub 3" or so blade, of course thats if ya intend to train with the thing kerambit style, if not it might be a good compromise, just depends on what ya want the thing for.

there are many other emerson designs that wave out of the pocket just as well as the combat karambit...you might like a waved cqc7.

You hit the nail on the head The hook is what makes it so effective despite its small size.
