The Buck is larger so it depends on whether you want a larger or smaller knife. The Buck is tip up carry while the Drifter is tip down. The Buck uses better steel with the BOS heat treated S30V. Better handle and ergos as far as I'm concerned. I like the flipper/hole combo on the Vantage Pro as well over the thumbstuds on the Drifter. The Drifter is just too small for my EDC needs. I had one and gave it to a buddy. I dig the Buck Vantage Pro. It makes a great EDC and has fantastic price tag to boot.
Just to make things clear incase you did not know... There are 3 different versions of the Buck Vantage: The cheapest is the Vantage Select(~$25) with plastic handle and 420hc blade. Next is the Vantage Avid(~$35) with sandvik 13c26 steel and a wood handle. The top of the series is the Vantage Pro(~$50) which sports S30v steel and a g10 handle. The Vantage Pro is seen by many to be about THE best value in folding knives right now, and it appears that the lockup issues that were present for the first couple months of production have been worked out.
Oh and for the original question I would say either are great choices. I own both and think if you should make your decision based on how big a knife you need. The Vantage series is about an inch longer than the Drifter. Both are pretty darn strong knives and excellent values. The frame lock on the Drifter is the better lock, and the Vantage has the better blade IMO. Either way you'll have a kick ass knife for the price good luck on your decision.
Vantage Pro.
S30V, BOS heat treat, G10. For $50 can't be beaten mine came out of the box razer sharp.
But the lockup issue HAS NOT been fixed.
Mine had enough play where I could shake (really hard) and get a little rattle. I remedied it with a little tape and peening of the lock bar.
It's very minor and it won't close up on you.
Now all I need to do is find my vantage pro .
