Tough finish

Would anyone care to recommend a wood finish tough enough to stand up to kitchen use - primarily handwash - but probably an occasional trip through the dishwasher as well? Ease of application would also be a bonus.

Thanks

Rob!

Rob,
Not a recommendation, but a possibility for you. Watco makes a penetrating Teak Oil Finish - according to the directions, it can be used for exterior marine application. I've used their regular finish for years with good results. But I've never tried it on a kitchen knife. From what other makers have told me, a kitchen is an especially tough environment for any knife handle made from natural material, even stabilized wood. Best wishes.

I think a thick coat of MICARTA will do the trick

Thanks for the suggestions. Micarta is not an option. The customer wants Thuya burl. It has been stabilized and I was looking for that little something extra. Tung oil? Fix-it? Varathane?

The customer has been advised that these are never to be in a dishwasher. Never is a very long time and I'm just looking for insurance.

Hello Rob, I think Tung oil is what you might want to try. Been used for centuries in the far east as a wood sealer and finish. It is also safe for bowls and other eating utensils! Available at most any hardware. I've used it on Bois D"arc handles and it polishes well!
