I asked this same question about 5 mo ago. A lot of people are going to say RC3/RC4 and they will be right.

I would look in the Maker's Section. Alot of great knives for a song on their. Plus, you will be getting a custom and supporting the members here that make them.

Despite my rather conspicuous and ostentious post above, I think that this is sound advice too; my front runner for such a knife would be Mr. Dan Koster. I saw his Monster Nessmuk in Tactical Knives this month and was absolutely blown away---I think that will be my next purchase!

fixed or folder? Fixed, I would agree with the RAT4, although I bet a Busse or Swamp Rat would be fun too( if you could bring yourself to dirty the blade). I just received a Lone Wolf Harsey T2 today, and that would be my new vote for a tough folder.

Really, there are alot of knives that will do the job.

Bill, the Harsey is on my list. Post back with your experience please.

Super, I also agree with buying custom/individual makers. Also, buy production too. Mix it up, if your budget allows. There's no rush, the appocolypse isn't here just yet.;)

Especially in these times it's nice to support an individual trying to make a go of knife making. There's knives for all price ranges avaliable from makers here. I've got one from bikermikearchery, and it's awsome. Stomper (JK knives) has some great stuff too. Koyote is another great maker right here on BF. Check around, and head over to wilderness and survival skills board, you'll see some great choices.

BRKT are nice. I really like my Bravo 1.

Why?

I like how it feels in the hand. Comfortable grip with some heft but nice and balanced IMO

Blade is nice too. Convex edge keeps a keen edge for a long time. It is a thicker knife but is still quite a good cutter.

I havent had the chance to test it hard yet, but from what others have said it holds out well.

I find it isnt that tactical looking which can be good when around sheeple...great hiking knife.

Is there a money budget?

Cheap...Mora
Expensive... Chris Reeve Shadow III With a dymondwood staff with a screwcap mated to the threads on the knife handle.

I am using an Ontario Pilots Survival knife (which everyone here is probably tired of hearing) but I cant say enough good things about it.

I don't have a RAT but they look great and everyone loves them.

I guess it depends on your budget and your preference.

A 3-4 inch knife is in your pocket, you're not going to leave your folder at home are you ? Buy a Rat Cutlery 5 or 6 for your belt.

Busse, any warden will do.

My favorite one...

A little on the thinner side and better all arounder, IMO, would be the Busse Boney Active Duty.

Thanks for the pics on the Busse Boney Active Duty, I didn't know that knife even existed. Very Cool

I would probably go with a RAT cutlery RC3 or RC4. However I have also carried an Camillus ilots survival knife for several very tough years with great results. Another favorite is the R10 from Himalayan Imports it is a great hand forged tough blade. I did however have to make a better sheath for it.

For a custom I went to Koyote knives and had Christof make me a leuku style bushcrafter. It is a great knife with probably the best sheath I've ever seen come with a blade.

There a great number of good blades out there. The guys at RAT cutlery get my vote due to the value they give to their customers and the way they honor their fantastic warranty. The RC4 has become my EDC blade due to its sheath system as well as the many great qualities of the knife itself.
