Tough question, (for me at least).:)

Have customer who is looking for a non-stainless, locking folder, with either a drop or clip point blade - between 3 and 4 inches.

He is a hunter, and knows what he wants. I have drawn a blank.

If there is one out there, I'm sure one of you know of it. ;)

Any info is appreciated.

Thanks

Price range? That would be helpful, but maybe a Recon 1 with the G10 handle. But from what I hear they're now made in taiwan. :jerkit:

The Boker Cinch line has a 3" carbon steel lock back.

The mountain main comes in a variety of steels.
1095, D2, ATS-34, and 420HC and a variety of handles.
Check out cumberland knife works ... they have the most selection.
They can be found under the Queen and Schatt and Morgan lines.
(I'm not sure they have the ATS-34 S&M stocked there but they do
have the others.)

Thanks for clearing that up about the Mountain Man, msiley. You know how those carbon-steel guys are, too much chromium makes them break out in a rash :D

Queen makes their #3L Mountian Man in D2.

They have done SFO's for Cumberland Knife Works in 1095 and they also make this same pattern for Moore Maker under that name in 1095.

I have a Queen Mountain Man made from 1095 and it is very nice.Blade takes on a good patina.1095 is good stuff.

It's too bad the Buck Custom Shop makes the 110 in six different steels, all of them stainless. :thumbdn:

You've heard of the Opinel, right? #10 or #12 would be good-sized hunting knives.

Does it absolutely have to be a folder? I know of several nice high-carbon fixed blades (AG Russell, Bark River, Canal Street Cutlery, Dozier, Mora, Northwoods, Kelgin). I prefer a non-folder for hunting, so I don't get blechhh inside the knife.

But it sounds like your customer has his mind made up...

Good Luck in your search,
-Bob

Is there no modern styled locking folder made of carbon steel?
What about tool steel? No one makes a production folder in S7 or D2?

Cold Steel had a line of Camillus-made folders in Carbon V, a carbon steel. I don't know where they would be available now.

If he doesn't need a clip, there are Case and Eye Brand and Boker carbon steel lockbacks. Some of them should have blades 3" and over. One of their sodbusters should be ideal.

Great response (as usual).;)

Some great suggestions - I was fixated on tactical folders I guess - I knew about the Mountain Man, Sod Buster and etc. - just had tunnel vision.

Thanks for the great response :) - Knew I wouldn't be disapointed.

Bob Dozier makes modern folders with D2 blades but the wait is pretty long. They are also pricey but worth it.
