I really like canvas pants and shorts (like carharts and filsons) for tromping around in the woods because they are almost indestructible and they provide good protection against thorns, rocks, etc. However the cotton canvas holds moisture so you end up being damp all the time.

The synthetic quick-drying type fabrics are nice for staying dry however they arn't very tough.

Does anyone know where to get pants and shorts that are both quick drying and tough?

I have some old Patagonia Baggies shorts and pants that I only use for backpacking and they have held up for years (since the late '80s to early '90s). Jungle fatigues dry real fast for cotton (I hiked in mine until they wore out) and the desert BDUs without the reinforced seat and knees might be a good bet. What I'd really like to find is a set of cargo pants in a heavier (3 to 5 oz.) Nylon or Polyester that still felt OK nest to the skin. The heavier Pertex (nylon microfiber) fabric from the UK might be ideal.

You can also treat cotton to make it more water resistant in the first place, but that only helps with precipitation and not perspiration.

I usualy find that the Propper BDU's are plenty tough enough and they will go from soaking wet to totaly dry in 30min or so on a hot day. maybe 50-60min in winter.

For day tripping or hiking in the bush these are the ones I wear all the time. The RAD's are nice with the cuffs - keep the bugs out. Only prob no belt loops. Surprisingly tough, super light and dry in 1/2 hr after being soaked.Sew up well when torn too.
The tech's are super tough, haven't torn them yet,got one pair.
But still prefer the RAD's as they are so light.
