What would be a good choice for the stainless steel for the rocker on a lockback? I'd like something tough and not too terribly expensive. Also, bonus points for it being a good candidate for heat treating for shock resistance and toughness.

Also, what steel wold be good to make the lockback spring from? Would the same steel be a good choice for a framelock's frame?

Maybe try 440-C. You can use it for blade and rocker. Also you can HT it. Might want to consider maybe D2 also...pretty close to stainless. Also 154cm

With the size parts you're talking about, it would take quite a lot of knives to make the cost savings worthwhile. I'd just go with whatever steel you'd like to make the blade out of.

For a frame lock, I would stick with titanium.

Titanium would be my first choice. Although, I've only made a couple knives that didn't have titanium in them. Since it doesn't have carbon, you can deform it with torch and not need to HT afterward. Plus, all the pretty colors you can make it with a few 9v batteries. . .

Sorry guys, i was under the impression it was a lock back, not a liner lock. If a linerlock, i would say titanium, If it is a lockback, i would recommend the same steel as the blade. The problem with SS is that if you do not have a kiln you will have to send it out for HT. If you do the blade at say 59-60c, do the spring/rocker at a 50c so it is more of a spring temper.
