Doc,

I have seen an antler shed that you used for your Bow Drill socket. It was neat and compact with a lanyard hole. What did you use?

I have used Deer antler and it seemed to loose material with each drill. Any other Antler material that others have used that they would recommend?

Thanks,

TF

Yo TF,

It is the tine of a moose antler. I have found with moose antler that different parts of the antler have different hardness. I once made a top bearing out of the 'plate' section of the antler and I had the same problem that you're experiencing.

I have used this for forever and you can see there is not much wear.

I have one deer antler top bearing that I use from time to time and it is a junction of a couple of tines. I think this area is harder than other areas but I haven't really experimented with it to know for sure.

Try ebay. Maybe you could get a group together to buy a moose antler and share the tines.

TF, too bad you didn't ask a couple of months ago. I gave all my spare antler to my flint knapping buddy in the thread kgd did. I'm still looking for a usuable tine, though.

This is the moose tine that Doc gave me and it works nicely!

In the mean time, buy your self some beef stewing bones, make your stew, let the dog have at it. After it is cleaned up, give it a whack with a big hammer and it will split in two. Drill a divot and you have an awesome headpiece. Doesn't heat up, friction free and feels great on the hands! This one is one of my favorites for comfort.

There are some Sambar Stag tines that are solid with no pith at all.I would think it would be very tough.Try www.elenhunting.com

I think all the tines are solid but I would ask.I have ordered from them and they are very helpful.
