I've been checking out the 'Toughest' knife thread, which has been totally cool btw. I've noticed the formula of tough knife seems to be

Large thick well made blade w/ tough handle material and ky/concealex sheath.

Does the toughest knife necessarily have to have the longest blade? Or could a blade less than even 4" be somehow stronger than a large blade?

Of course a smaller knife could be stronger. It seems to me that if you took for instance a Battle Mistress and scaled it down to a 4in. blade it would naturally be stronger because it would be stouter and cut down on leverage, making the knife stronger in all aplications. Just an opinion.

Have you been keeping up with that thread? Two short knives have been mentioned -- Kevin Wilkins makes a number of different models with a 1/4" thickness and 4" overall length, 2" blade (6.35mm, 10cm, 5cm). A pic of another maker's knife was posted and the poster said it had a thickness of 3/8" (9.5mm) at the spine in the center, tapering toward both ends -- he didn't say how long it is, but it looks short.

It's a good idea to start a new thread for discussing that kind of tough knife, I think; they're different.

A blade 2" long and 1/4" thick is fantastically strong; I think it would be very reasonable to argue it's more indestructible (yes, I know I used a comparative adjective for an absolute quality ... so sue me) than the Ang Khola Bowie. It's a monster of a different kind, but a monster nonetheless.
