What is the toughest knife steel commonly available ? Wear resistance average to good. No special sharpening tool/material required.

Stainless or Carbon? Elmax or maybe S7. Anything with high tungsten and or vanadium should give you what you want.

5160, though it hard to get in thinner stocks, unless you know a good source. O1 great all around steel.

Please define the following terms:

"Commonly available"
"Special"
"Average to good"

My face is ready.

Wait- Does that mean he wants a knife that never has to be sharpened? That sounds like a water jet or laser cutter of some kind.

Carbon steel? 3v is very good, but there are lots of choices among carbon steels that are not expensive and readily available.

M4 has always been one of my favorites. Very high wear resistant and above average toughness. Won't rust as easy as 3v.
