Toughest watch in the world

I have a couple of G-Shock watches for years.

Not a single one of them has given up on me. The original G-Shock which I bought in the 80s is still running. In fact, its battery didn't stop until after 10 years.

So I thought it may be the toughest watch in the world until someone said the Suunto may be its successor. Since I don't own a Suunto, I don't know if its claim is true.

All I know is Suunto has got a big watch face. It doesn't look that tough though.

Any Suunto watch owners wish to expand on this matter?

I think the Casio Triple Sensor Pathfinder watch is tougher than the G-shock. I knocked the hell out of that thing through years of mountaineering, backpacking, and various hard outdoor living. The glass face is covered with deep scratches from numerous hard slams into rock. None of that affected the watch performance at all. The only thing it's not tough enough to handle is the reckless watchmaker who stripped the screw threading when changing batteries.

I don't know about the Suunto.

The Zodiac Super Seawolf. Water resistant to 1000 meters. Mineral Crystal is recessed below rotating bezel, if you drop it/bang it against wall/floor, it won't hit the crystal. One tough watch!

I was looking for a watch that would meet similar criteria a couple of years ago, and I found the St Moritz Pathfinder Ti Alarm (Sp50w5).

It has a titanium case, Blackout luminous technology, water resistant to 100m (good for snorkeling and swimming), screw back and screwdown crown, built-in alarm (unusual benefit for an analog watch), hardened (heat tempered) mineral crystal (not Sapphire but still scratch resistant), and you can select from rugged band choices (or put on your own 20mm band). All for around $100 US. You need to email them for a dealer near you. If there isn't one then they will sell direct.

For me the biggest advantage a watch can have when it comes to knocking it around is to just stay the hell out of the way! This watch is thin and the crown and alarm button are low profile. Nothing to catch on sleeves, ropes, straps, rocks, branches, etc. I also have a Casio pathfinder (see above rec), and I like it too, BUT it seems like it is always catching on something. Day to day this is a minor nuisance, but in an extreme situation it can be a major hassle. The St Moritz Pathfinder Ti does not catch on things, which prolongs its life as well as yours.

The design is based on the military field watches of the last half of the 20th Century. It's a timeless look, and in my opnion attractive and dressy enough for anything (provided you hose it down after you get in from playing).

The model Sp50w5 that I have also comes with a Kevlar Superweave band (rubber and Titanium options are available). My Kevlar band has held up remarkably well, although I usually switch to a nylon NATO type band if things are going to get wet.

Check it out.

Well, the Casios are cheap and tough. Hands down if you are to compare it with the Suuntos. But when it comes to precision and features, I'm yet to come across any wristop computer that measures up to the Suuntos. I pack the Sunnto Advizor, thrown it around and took it to the toughest terrain in our jungles of Malaysia. Still no defects. This lightweight watch performed flawlessly. To sum it up, what you get is what you pay for...

For the money a G-shock can't be beat. They really take a lickin'

I Luminox when I want to look a little dressier, but when I go in the field it is a G-shock that I wear. Actually the only reason I even have any Luminox's is becasue I get them so cheap.

Ned,

That St.Moritz Pathfinder is a nice looking watch. I would like to have one just like it. Do you find the luminous markings to work as well as the company said? How about the Kevlar band- I have trouble with the nylon bands as they seem to develop bad odors after a few weeks, does the Superweave band seem to "breathe" well?
