I'm curious from a performance standpoint, out of 1095, 1084, O-1 and 52100 (all properly heat treated and tempered) how would you rate these four steels from toughest to least tough, from the most edge retention to the least?

It's a rough guess...

Edge retention (highest to lowest):
Toughness (lowest to highest):
1. 52100
2. O-1
3. 1095
4. 1084

... but I'm no steel guru. I'm sure Vassili or one of the other guys will chime in...

Remember that toughness anmd edge holding are opposites. the greater the 'toughness" the less edge holding.

I believe that 0-1 will give you the best edge holding, since it's a low end "tool steel." D-2 and M-2 will beat any of these for edge holding.

All properly heat treated?

I would hardly notice a difference. I guess, nobody will.

Just by chemistry 1084 should be the toughest for it contains less carbon than the others.

But overall, you picked up very comparable steel grades.
